Andrew Alexander Barber is a young man from a little [but sometimes famous] place called Loch Lomond. It is featured in the famous song 'Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond'.
Anyway.. back to Andrew...

Andrew is a student at Central College of Commerce (http://www.centralcollege.ac.uk/). He hopes to move on to university next year, to continue studying Software Development. He will be finding out soon whether he is going to Uni or not. == About ==
Line 8: Line 14:
Other than going to college he enjoys many many other things [not to say I love going to college]. My name is Andrew Alexander Barber, a young contributor from Scotland. I am currently studying Software Development at the Central College of Glasgow. I am an active Scout leader in the non-geek world, devoting a few hours per night on different Scout groups.
Line 10: Line 16:
He has been a GNU/Linux user for 2 or 3 years. Mainly a user, not programming too much, looking at source code with cross eyes etc. Though that time he has been through a number of distro's and now mainly uses CRUX(http://crux.nu/) and Ubuntu, though that is not solid. == Usage ==
Line 12: Line 18:
He is here to help out with Ubuntu..first appearing to help with the Scots translation. He is looking around for other things he can help with. I use ubuntu on my server and also my iBook G4.
The Apple iBook G4 is my daily machine as I don't spend large amount of times at home, meaning I need something portable. The book dual boots with Mac OSX.
I have Ubuntu installed on home x86 machines however I never get to use these.
Line 14: Line 22:
He owns many different machines, including PPC's, Sparc and a couple of x86's. Most of these are out dated, and are found/recovered/given. I started using Ubuntu very early on, however it never stuck untill fairly recently.
Line 16: Line 24:
Andrew is also a consent IRC go-er. I am spread right across the Freenode network..from ##windows to ##linux. His baby gem channel is #tuxhacker (http://tuxhacker.org). Another channel I regular is #tapthru.
I am also a member of other IRC networks, of which you can see at the bottom of this profile.
Line 19: Line 25:
He also moderates a new up and coming fora called Nuxified (http://nuxified.org). This was after he fell out with LinuxForums (http://linuxforums.org) due to their 'Money Money Money!' approach to things. Nuxified has less bloat, kinder users, more tasks, friendly staff and so on and so forth. == Translations ==
Line 21: Line 27:
Currently furthering his passion in webdev, he has made a few web sites, including companies, and his own quests. I am a member of the Ubuntu translation team, helping out primarily with the Scots translation. I am slowly learning Scottish Gaelic too, so may soon be able to contribute with that group also.
Line 23: Line 29:
In the non e-world, climbing and hiking is a much loved activity. He walked 100(well 98)miles across the Black Forest of Germany. On nothing but 5euros for food, accommodation and any thing else.
Also a member of the Glasgow Climbing wall, where he climbs on a semi-regular basis.
He enjoys spending his evenings in the local pub, partaking in a beer round and talking to friends. He does the normal teenage scene of pubs -> clubs and sometimes home. Often in Glasgow.

AndrewB has been a member of the Scouting movement for more than a decade now. He is training to become a Scout section leader, and currently helps out every possible chance. === IRC ===
Line 29: Line 33:
He is also a semi-regular at his local Linux User Group...called ScotLUG. I often use Internet Relay Chat to communicate with many members of the GNU/Linux and F(l)OSS community. I am an active helper in the #ubuntu channel, as well as many other channels stretching across the network. Other semi-large channels include #tuxhacker and #tapthru. TuxHacker is a community set up by myself and others to help GNU/Linux users in a friendly way. A lot of the other channels that I am part of, are channels that I have chan-op status and help maintain their community.
I now moderate the official freenode channels; #freenode and #defocus
Line 31: Line 36:
So that is it. I think you now know him... === Fora/Forum Work ===

I currently only tend to use one fora, which is one that I also help moderate. The fora is called Nuxified, and is aimed at providing help to Free/Open source software. It is part of the Libervis Network and has thus made me more active in the network as a whole. I used to help out on LinuxForums but left due to my stance on many activities of the fora.
Slowly but surely I am using more and more of ubuntu forums.

Documentation
I have started working on community documentation for the Ubuntu Documentation team. Submitting articles on things I have worked on in the past and learning new things to document to help other members of the Ubuntu Community.

Testing
I have helped out with the laptop testing team, producing the following two articles;
 * LaptopTestingTeam/FujitsuAmiloL7300
 * LaptopTestingTeam/Apple_Macintosh/iBookG4

Promotion
I have handed out many, many live and install disks during my years as a GNU/Linux enthusiast. Even when not an Ubuntu user in my past, I would still pass out the Ubuntu distro as I thought it was best for new users. I also have asked local computer shops to keep a pile and hand out if possible.
Along with that, I semi-regularly email my member of parliament (currently John McFall) about my views on F(l)OSS and Open Source matters. Including GNU/Linux usage in Schools, and within the local Council.
I hope to help out, and promote Ubuntu Linux (if the chance a rises) at any GNU/Linux event I attend this year.

Events
This year I should be attending;
 * DebConf
 * aKademy07
 * Lug Radio Live

LoCo
I am fairly active on the UKTeam mailing list, as well as the IRC channel. Much of the chat is genreal discussion but I help out with any problems too.
Also designing the new look loco pages, still in progress though.

Membership
I officially became an Ubuntu Member on April 3rd 2007.
