MOTUApplication

I, Angel Abad, apply for MOTU

Who I am

I'm Angel Abad, spanish (Basque Country) and 32. I'm free software entusiast since 15 when I met linux and gnu with one Slackware distribution. I'm sysadmin and I use Debian for my servers and Ubuntu for my desktop computers. I'm Debian Official Maintainer in Debian Developer applicant process.

Sorry for my English but I'm learning hard.

My Ubuntu story

I've been using Ubuntu for 3 years more or less in my desktop computers and I feel very confortable using it. I contributed to Debian and more or less one year ago I started to contribute in Ubuntu too. If I use it I try to contribute it...

My involvement

At the moment Im contributing with merges, syncs and some bug fixes and ftbs through sponsors, and when I have time I work reporting bugs to upstream authors and tracking this bugs, making connection between launchpad and upstream bug system.

When I have free time, I like to translate technical documentation into spanish, at the moment I'm translating the Ubuntu Packaging Guide: Packaging Guide Translations

Also my Debian packages are imported into Ubuntu, I co-work with Debian Perl Team and some packages with Python Team.

Examples of my work / Things I'm proud of

Here there are my Natty Release contributions, if you want see other release contributions please see all my uploaded packages in Launchpad

FTBFS

Merges

Syncs

Debian Maintained Packages

Areas of work

I'm working hard with merges and syncs with http://merges.ubuntu.com. Also I'm interested in package quality, things like lintian errors and maintain Ubuntu synced with Debian as possible.

Things I could do better

I should work more on SRUs.

Plans for the future

General

First, I would like to become a sponsor and help other people to integrate their work in Ubuntu, and also with time become a core-dev developer.

What I like least in Ubuntu

I dont like very much that sometimes poorly tested software is included in Ubuntu distribution. Sometimes it is better to have stability that the latest version.

General Feedback

First of all I would like to voice Daniel's opinion here that Angel is doing tremendous high quality work of bringing in changes from debian and I must admit that he has shown awesome collaboration with debian in forwarding the relevant changes and I cannot remember a single comment in the bugs we worked together in natty cycle asking him to resubmit stuff. Overall great quality work and during my short stint with sponsoring till now I have always looked for Angel's bugs in the sponsorship queue due to his high quality work. I fully endorse his application and I think he will be an invaluable addition to the MOTU team. Keep up the great work going!

Specific Experiences

I sponsored around 25 of Angel's bugs, Here are a few examples of the same

Stefano Rivera

General feedback

Angel's work has always been first class. Almost all sponsorships passed without comment, they are a pleasure to sponsor. The only changes I can see being a changelog correction, and a couple of merges that could be synced.

I have sponsored many merges and syncs for Angel, and as can be expected he collaborates well with Debian on getting changes upstream.

Areas of Improvement

There are some more areas of MOTU work to explore: SRUs, FTBFS fixes.

General feedback

I have enough done work with Angel to tell that he is familiar with merges, syncs and fixing FTBFS. Cooperate with Debian is good. Angel is very involved in Ubuntu development and I believe that he will gain a lot of benefit in distribution.

Areas of Improvement

There were a couple of minor typos in debian/changelog or in DEP3 tags. I'm very demanding and work must be done perfectly. In one case I noticed that Angel doesn't test packages before submitting merge request. I'm afraid about that. I guess that Angel blindly gets merges from Merge-o-Matic. Angel could get a bit knowledge in SRUs and security fixes. However, if Angel wants to focus on reduce outstanding merges, then that's fine for me. Summarizing, I'm abstained for this application. Please take my comments as constructive.

Benjamin Drung

General feedback

I have sponsored two sync requests and two merge requests since Angel became Universe Contributor and over a dozen syncs and one merge before he became Universe Contributor. His requests were the most verbose ones. I wish every sync requester were that precise. Angel should become MOTU.
