About me

My name is Ian MacGregor, I am a member of Clan Gregor and I use the nickname ardchoille online. My nickname was taken from the phrase "Ard Choille!", which is Scottish Gaelic for "To the high trees!" - the war cry of my clan.

My computer experience

I have been using computers since age 21 and building computers since age 35. I am fairly fluent with bash scripts, HTML, CSS, javascript and am currently learning Python and php. My first Linux distribution was debian and from there I went on to 17 other distros before finding Ubuntu and Kubuntu. I have been using Ubuntu/Kubuntu since 2004 and Linux since about 2001. I signed the Ubuntu Code Of Conduct on April 06, 2007 and was made an Ubuntu/Kubuntu member on December 12, 2007.

My contributions

For the past couple of years I have volunteered my time in #ubuntu, #kubuntu, and other channels, on the [http://freenode.net/ Freenode irc network]. I have also provided support on the [http://ubuntuforums.org/ Ubuntu Forums], submit bugs in [https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs launchpad], and edited/proofread articles on the [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ Ubuntu Wiki] and [https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UserDocumentation Ubuntu Documentation] websites. I spend a bit of time promoting Ubuntu/Kubuntu and have helped over 200 people and businesses in my area switch to Linux from other operating systems since 2003.

My thoughts

I have been using computers for most of my life. I have called upon support for them many times but always found it to be lacking. One of the things that drew me to the Linux community is the fact that you can get quality help from thousands of people for any Linux distro. #ubuntu and #kubuntu have over a thousand folks sitting in the those channels alone just waiting to help people solve a problem and every distro has this kind of help. These are not people sitting at a help desk reading from a book of company-created memos. Rather, these are people who use Linux on a daily basis. This, I believe, is one of the key reasons that Linux is so popular and will continue to grow.

My plans

I plan to continue providing the help and support for Ubuntu/Kubuntu that I have provided for the past years. Eventually I would like to become a packager.
