General

The artTeam is a community of individuals who support the larger community of Ubuntu by contributing themes, icons, background images, and other appropriate submissions of art. The desire of the team is to create and make available high quality graphics to the Ubuntu community and advocating for and supporting the creative tools included with Ubuntu.

The following are the basic rules and guidelines that all artwork in Ubuntu must follow.

  • Submissions should be made in formats that can be read by software available from the Ubuntu Repositories. Preferred image formats include XFC, SVG, and PNG. Preferred sound formats include WAV, FLAC and OGG Vorbis. Master files, which may be further edited, should be maintained in non-lossy formats. Preserving vector graphics, raster layers and channels is important for such materials.
  • All contributions must be covered by an appropriate License agreement such as the Creative Common Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License. As adding value to the Ubuntu community is core to our purpose, we encourage contributors to conduct them self in a manner suggested by the Ubuntu Code Of Conduct.

  • Submissions must respect artwork licensing. If your submissions consist of artwork created by other people, please make sure the license of the original work you incorporate is compatible with Ubuntu and that you are not violating any of the provisions of its license. Just because a work is licensed with a Creative Commons license does not mean it is free to use (make sure you provide attribution to artists that license their work with a CC Attribution clause.)
  • No version numbers. Some individuals may desire to use an older theme, or use the latest theme in their older version of Ubuntu. To permit that choice, do not use any version numbers in your artwork.
  • No text or logos should be used in the wallpapers. They are not easily translated and the desire is advocate the adoption of Ubuntu without prejudice to culture and to support derivative distributions without extensive changes.
  • Use Community Resources. The Artwork Team is supported with resources from the larger community. Commonly used resources are:
