INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the first meeting of AustralianTeam.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Changing to fortnight meetings instead of weekly meetings.

COMMENTS

Weekly meetings seem a bit excesive.
Weekly meetings would be too much of a commitment to attend.
Working with a fortnightly schedule would bring us inline with other Ubuntu teams.
We should try out weekly meetings.
Is there a need for weekly meetings? Will there be enough ideas for discussion in future?
Some members may not attend every meeting if weekly meetings were the case.
A few members suggested weekly meetings would be a good idea.
A few members would be fine with either.
A social meeting in between formal meetings might be a good idea.
Use of the mailing list for people who cannot make the meetings.
Fortnighly meetings would allow for fortnight of ideas.
A dual listing on the main Presentations Wiki page would be encouraged.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

If was decided that fortnightly meetings were the more favourable idea.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Addition of a 'Talks' section to the Wiki.
This would list talks given by members of the team throughout the year.

COMMENTS

This would encourage members to give talks at local Linux user group meetings.
It would help develop marketing initiatives.
There are a couple of presentations on the Ubuntu website already.
If people have content to put there then it would be a good idea.
We should make an effort to get along to some of the talks.
Would be nice to see what was being developed for Ubuntu in Australia.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

Members in favour of this section being added.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Official LoCo Team confirmation.

COMMENTS

We are on the agenda for the next CommunityCouncil meeting.
Mathias Ulrichs has been emailed regarding it.
There is serious organisation and interest in an Australian LoCo team.
Still waiting on official date/time for meeting. Fujitsu and YukiCuss are monitoring the webpage
for this information, so someone can be present at the meeting.
Becoming official would be right due to current numbers of members.
Would be good to have more projects as examples of our work.
Maybe becoming official would be a bit soon, what is the criteria for acceptance?
General feeling that acceptance wont be difficult.
Being an active group would be enough for acceptance.
If we are not accepted we should be advised why and what we can do to make it official.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

To be followed up at CommunityCouncil and steps taken to make group official.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Develop Schools project

COMMENTS

Promoting Ubuntu to schools would be a good project idea.
Fujistsu and YukiCuss are already looking into this area.
The Linux Australia list has already had big discussion on a Schools project.
A schools project would be a good idea for a few keen members.
Need to work out what the project is aiming to achieve.
Project could look at Ubuntu in school contracts.
There is some close member association with teachers that would help this project.
General aim is to get Ubuntu into schools.
Suggestion that NSW school system is a closed shop, being contracted to Microsoft etc.
A seperate page should be created for this project.
A good demonstration system should be first step. Fujitsu and Yukicuss have been developing this for some time.
Edubuntu would be good to look into.
YukiCuss and Fujistsu have previously set up a Breezy LTSP server to boot a computer room from.
YukiCuss and Fujistsu are looking at moving some services to Dapper in the near future.
Perhaps the project should not aim to change too much instially. Concentrate on smaller introduction of Ubuntu.
We should think about the concept of small networks and figure out exactly what 'playing' around with Ubuntu would entail.
There should be room to allow a small collection of computers in schools to run non-Microsoft software.
Convincing schools to setup one or two computers at first might be a good idea.
The programming utilities in Ubuntu might be good for programming classes. Apache for web developing.
Another idea is looking into open source library management systems.
High schools might be the first to look at. Primary schools would be an entirely different and harder target.
Handing out CD's to school is another idea.
There are many schools with Apple machines which Ubuntu will be compatible with.
Machine compatibility is a good selling point.
Is the priority to get more students working with Linux/Ubuntu or providing a replacement for the Microsoft set of tools.
Hook primary students into Linux while they are young.
Replacing Windows may not be the best primary task.
We need to offer a system that is easier for the school to manage.
Schools also have non-Microsoft software that they use for various tasks that have had large amounts of money invested in them.
We should start with simple ideas.
Microsoft offer very good deals to schools these days.
We could try distributing Ubuntu cd's through schools.
Two angles of attack - demonstration and small numbers of PC's, and open source software for Windows.
It'll be hard to push FOSS into schools, at least to start with.
If they spent their money on hardware instead of software they could provide a better computing environment.
Demonstrate the power of FOSS along side managability of an actual network with demonstration, educate the schools about the benefits, and also about what they could expect to realistically lose.
We should start a project Wiki to build on this discussion.
Windows is the main desktop out there and people need experience with it when entering workforce.
Apple schools like what they have already.
Reference to schools in Taipei switching to open source linux systems for teaching.
Switching to Ubuntu might be good realisitic goal for the future.
The 'real world' after school needs to be considered.
There is significant educational software that only runs under Windows.
Holiday classes for students could be looked at.
Should aim to replace servers in schools.
Replacing Windows should be a long term goal.
Some Windows titles could be tested under Wine.
There are companies working on Linux only environments.
Maybe we can nominate some leaders for these projects?

GENERAL CONSENSUS

We need to develop a project page with these ideas. To start small and develop on these
ideas later. No leaders for now, with anyone interested in helping out able to develop with this project. Having project leaders might be a bit non-Ubuntu.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Business Project

COMMENTS

There are currently member(s) in the group with MBA experience who would be able to develop a Business Project.
A lot of members in favour of a Business Project.
A lot of members could contribute to this project.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

A Business Project should be created along with the Schools Project.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Marketing Project

COMMENTS

Could we make Marketing a seperate project?
We need to discuss how to present ourselves to the public.
Marketing could be develped throught the Business and Schools Projects.
We could do trade shows and Linux user goup meetings.
There have already been install fests with Ubuntu.
A girls of Ubuntu calender (Maybe not?).
A third project of Home User Marketing would be a good idea.
A boys of Ubuntu calender (?)
Marketing would round off a neat three projects to concentrate on.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

We should develop a third project looking at Home User Marketing that would also build marketing for the Schools and Business Projects.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

CD Distribution

COMMENTS

We need ShipIt to send a few hundred CD's to us.
ndazza had previously organised 500 for a lug without hassles.
We need to organise copies of the Dapper CD's as soon as they are released.
Can we pre-order Dapper? Maybe a month before?
If we can get copies early we can distribute with teh 'buzz'.
We should discuss numbers of cd's we require. Further discussion needed.
CD's should be ordered in good shipping quanities to ensure safe arrival. (Lots of 50)
Maybe ordering x64 format cd's might deter users due to restricted format abilities.
Official CD's are much better than home burnt versions. Not 'dodgy' looking.
It can be discussed at next Community Council meeting.
Maybe we can pre-organise things with a ShipIt contact?
Have cd's posted through contact in ShipIt at no cost.
Contact jdud about CD numbers
Members can distribute to following areas. elkbuntu - albury/wodonga (hume/riverina), bustacap - brisbane, other areas to be worked out further.
Can we start an initiative to promote in Perth/WA?

GENERAL CONSENSUS

CD numbers and distribution areas need to be discussed in more detail. Method of getting early copies of Dapper need to be worked out.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Do we need a Website/Forum?

COMMENTS

Canonical is getting us a domain.
What is happening with ubuntu.com.au? Still being chased up (YukiCuss).
Maybe a blog type page with our goings on.
Fujitsu waiting on reply about hosting.
Everything we need could be wiki'd
ubuntu.com.au would be more 'uniform'.
Wiki might not be ideal format for information dissemination.
Would need to be commercial entity to get .com.au, also need ABN.
What about .net.au?
ubuntu.com.au is owned by 'solutions first'
Maybe cononical could buy the domain.
We might look at getting registered as some sort of official organisation.
We could look at ways to get domain off 'solutions first'.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

Domain name and hosting still needs more information, and the forum is not yet needed. Postponed until further meetings.

===================
TOPIC OF DISCUSSION

Logo for AustralianTeam.

COMMENTS

Fujitsu has done a great job on current logo ideas.
Three logo suggestions listed on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AustralianTeam/.
General request for members to choose their preferred logo.
Logo with 'kangaroo' may have copyright concerns.
General liking of second logo with larger stars.
Lots of discussion of various other ways of doing the logo.
Maybe selection of logo should be deferred until further meetings to allow time to develop further.
Any suggestions can be messaged/emailed to Fujistu.
Design could be taken to Community Council to ask.

GENERAL CONSENSUS

No clear favourite. Designs need to be further developed and will be discussed at next meeting.
