Jan Bongaerts is scheduled to present an interactive session in a IT class, with up to 20 participants working a computer from the Ubuntu 10.10 live CD.

The presentation was a success. About 12 motivated people were present. Most of them already knew the system, but to the few that it was new, it was very useful. Those that already were acquainted, brought their own laptop for installation. It looks like UGent is a good platform to promote Ubuntu. They have an Open Source Workgroup that is very qualified and dedicated. The interaction from a 'normal' user was a fresh approach and I think it worked.

This could work again next year. Only some minor issues could be tweaked.

- It was not easy to set up the network connection to Ugent's server from a wireless connection. This could be part of the presentation next time, and the necessary packages should be available on a USB or something. A clever programmer might even include it in the live CD, especially tweaked for UGent.

- Some things that are trivial with a full installation, aren't with the live CD, and this could be prepared better. We thought Skype would be available in the repositories, but it wasn't. Dutch language support on the live CD was sketchy. I could not find anything on the internet straight away, but there should be a way of downloading the correct packages and install them. This would be a useful excercise for the students as well.

Bij elk probleem: Google "Ubuntu + zoekterm" Voorbeeld: Standaard Ubuntu geeft geen Num Lock bij startup. Google "Ubuntu Numlock on start" Kijk naar de antwoorden. Kies wat voor jou van toepassing is. Bij https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NumLock krijg je goede uitleg. Twee mogelijkheden. Voor eentje heb je de terminal nodig. Heb geen schrik van de terminal. Gewoon copy paste. Mocht er iets drastisch gebeuren, vraagt Ubuntu altijd eerst voor je paswoord. Dan moet je oppassen dat je bron betrouwbaar is. In dit geval: https, officiele ubuntu pagina. Geen probleem.

Naamgeving Ubuntu versies: jaar + maand. Nu elke 6 maanden een nieuwe versie. gewone versie: support (updates) voor minstens 18 maanden. LTS (Long Term Support) versie: support voor minstens 36 maanden.
