Topic #ubuntu-be : http://ubuntu-be.org | get support at #ubuntu-nl, #ubuntu-fr, #ubuntu-de, #ubuntu | IRC meeting on Wednesday 2010-02-03 at 21h (UTC+2), see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/IrcMeetings for agenda and more information Hi to all, who is here for the meeting I'm here +1 o/ check Hi hello wamukota, XiaoShiZi, JanC, mongolito404, nero_, ....anyone else ? yanu? i propose to start, mimor will join the chanel later opic 1 – past and future events jup Mimor present hello mimor dipro ghent 31/01- report report and pictures are already in the wiki in his report, kws made some reflexions about the repetition of dipro fairs especially in ghent : 4 fairs in 1 year is perhaps too much we should find new ways/events to promote ubuntu: all suggestions are welcome! mimor : comment ? I do agree the reason there were not so many people was probably an over-load of diprofairs :) but it's impossible to tell when there will be a biggeraudience (sorry for the slow typing... my fingers are still frozen... I'm comming from outside) first we can skip the dipro Ghent on 18/04/2010, I guess so :) but we certainly need new ideas We've actually added money ourselves... that's something bad I did hear something about canonical no longer shipping cd's? or did I misread that? only a small number are shipped for free 400 CDs, but that uncludes Kubuntu & Ubuntu Server... even on this day, there were not enough cd's... includes now I know why we should look for a way to get them pressed ourselves but I can't see how we can do this without funding sponsoring... or selling them... If we charge money for the cd's (even a little bit) we have to pay double for the dipro-fairs mimor: no we don't (as we're selling at that moment) I tought we only have to pay half because we're not selling anything? enlighten me plz ;) they said to Mark it's okay as long as we don't sell things that the regular shops sell oh we should be sure tough and as lon,g as we don't become a shop ourselves of course ^^ we already sell posters... ;) almost forgot about that one :) and if any t-shirts are left after FOSDEM, we can sell those too that might be another way to make money of course Put one aside for me you'll be there, so that should be no problem ;) (as I had to wear a Microsoft IT-pro day's T-shirt a few dipro's ago >< we should certainly limit the distribution of cd's to the people who are really interested can we make profit by re-selling the T-shirts all trough something like setting up our own web-shop ... or is it forbidden by Canonical? we certainly make a profit on t-shirts the problem with the canonical shop (to me, that is) is that the shipping costs are too high I'm not going to sell t-shirt at a price with 2 figures after the decimal separator ;) So we might try to re-sell ubuntu gear with a lower shipping cost on some way it's just a thought * streep (~eclips@d5152844E.access.telenet.be) a rejoint #ubuntu-be About web-shop. This is not an easy task to run one. It takes some times. Off course, not full time. * streep est parti (Client Quit) * AndChat| (~eclips@d5152844E.access.telenet.be) a rejoint #ubuntu-be It's not like some online colruyt webshop ofc ;) I don't expect to sell huge loads of stuff cd's are certainly a problem but we definitively need new ideas about events and another way to approach potential users And if we want to sell goods with the Ubuntu logo we will have to check the legality with Canonical. Beeing an officiel LoCo certainly helps. I propose more Ubuntu-be bloggers If people want to blog about Ubuntu related stuff, I can give them an account on my wordpress >< to approach potential users ofc mongolito404: reselling stuff from canonical's shop is no problem though We certainly need more good bloggers. at the fairs etc. * AndChat- (~eclips@188.188.105.97) a rejoint #ubuntu-be And there is certainly many good bloggers ubunteros in Be. We as now, we failed to attract them under the Ubuntu-be banner; I'll try to gather the ubuntu blogging belgians :) mimor: We have a planet on Ubuntu-be But it is not really alive. I know, still have to find out how that works :) * t00r__ est parti (Remote host closed the connection) But the infrastructure is there ready to be used. if you have an account on the site, you can add your blog... IIRC * AndChat| est parti (Read error: Connection reset by peer) Sure it has some glitch but nothing that couldn't be fixed once the motivation of seeing it used is there. * AndChat| (~eclips@188.188.104.105) a rejoint #ubuntu-be linking all belgian ubuntu blogs trough the blogroll would be a nice start let's set up a wiki page with all blogs from belgian ubuntu users? thats a start to pull belgian ubuntu users closer to the ubuntu-be community ;) we can continue on this topic at the end of the meeting : coming back to the dipro ghent report, are there other proposals of events in ghent area ? for spreading ubuntu to new people, we can try to mail all city's that we're available to do something if they organise it-related events (Accenta seemed to be a good example) * AndChat- est parti (Ping timeout: 265 seconds) mimor: I can arrange the permission on the website so that you, or other, could maintain a blogroll there. would be nice (I guess I have the rights to create it myself, but didn't had the time to look into the drupal thing) jean7491, no further comments on the dirp ghent or other events in ghent for now there are certainly other opportunities like accenta, but we (=everybody) have to actively look for these events * ADcomp (~4e8175c8@gateway/web/freenode/x-denddprzzqbppcls) a rejoint #ubuntu-be contact with digipolis ghent was a good example * selckin est parti (Quit: .) Blogroll => https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-belgium/+bug/516732 hello .. sorry , i'm late :( no problem ADcomp, we've not started FOSDEM yet ☺ another example, the digital week : like i will do it in ostende, we should participate to this kind of event but we need local initiatives and looking towards the future events coming back to the meeting agenda : next item dipro kortrijk 07/02 minimum team = 3 yanu, wamukota and me we still need additional volunteers, but it seems hopeless! nevertheless we will do it well, 3 should work, I've done fairs with 2 ;) but you get tired near the end then though For more events: I think we should find a way to put the emphases on collaboration with existing groups. HCC invited us on their booth fr the Antwerpen Dipro (if I understand correctly). Maybe we should seek for more collaboration like this. * selckin (~selckin@unaffiliated/selckin) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Excess Flood) JanC, don't forget the stuff we asked for Kortrijk likely no problem of preparation, just a few coordination with yanu (and wamukota) - btw, is it ok with cd's+posters+stickers as i asked? wamukota: I didn't forget, are you at home tomorrow? I am after 17:00 mongolito404 : i will come back later on the event in a'pen and the cooperation with hcc i suppose no other comment about kortrijk dipro ? not from me jean7491 oh, a question for the Ghent people: was there "HCC test booth" there? as long as you pick me up on Sunday ;-) wamukota : ok mimor & co. ^^^ * AndChat| est parti (Remote host closed the connection) * AndChat| (~eclips@188.188.104.105) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * AndChat| est parti (Client Quit) "HCC test booth" ? * AndChat| (~eclips@188.188.104.105) a rejoint #ubuntu-be JanC, yes they were there but I haven't seen people that were interested in them no one actually knew what 'testbank' ment I guess :) "NIEUW: alle aankopen kunnen vanaf nu gratis getest worden op de beurs bij de HCC testbank. U kan ook meegebrachte onderdelen laten nakijken." was in the Dipro promo mail ☺ In between the lines, I just found this website: http://www.opengemeenten.be/ would be cool if they could test Ubuntu compatibility too ;) I guess we should contact HCC about that anyway, next topic ? Fosdem 2010 6-7/02 JanC ? : something to announce ? * hfsdo est parti (Remote host closed the connection) * selckin (~selckin@gwickt.com) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Changing host) * selckin (~selckin@unaffiliated/selckin) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Excess Flood) t-shirts, stickers, mouse mats, mugs, lanyards & keychains arrived well * selckin (~selckin@gwickt.com) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Changing host) * selckin (~selckin@unaffiliated/selckin) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Excess Flood) * mimor is glad ^^ I will be making flyers for FOSDEM tomorrow * hfsdo (~hfsdo@unaffiliated/hfsdo) a rejoint #ubuntu-be if some of what I bought doesn't get sold during FOSDEM, we can sell it at H&C days in Antwerp and later computer fairs and other events brb now I'm thinking about what to show / and what hardware we have available I have my EEE 900 on which I might install the netbook remix or Qimo or Lubuntu or something like that ADcomp: what hardware will you bring? (I know you always have something special ;) ) I'll bring the bike of fredy de kerpel again I've a EEE 900 too. I think it is already running UNR 9.10 (I don't really use it) I've my own Laptop and I've decided if i should bring it. acer aspire one ( Lucid / netbook remix ) / dev board (arm processor) + touchscreen 4.3'' ( Karmic) On the fun side, if it is of any use, I also have a Kysoh but nothing really cool to do with it. And it is not really ubuntu related. Sorry, it a Kysoh Tux Droid I have a Tux Droid too ;) nokia n770 ( Jaunty ) .. eee T91 touchscreen ( but touchscreen driver is buggy and kill X ) better not demo crashing apps ;-) yes .. :( did you try the moblin remix on the ARM board ? hm, apparently only available on intel * selckin (~selckin@unaffiliated/selckin) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Excess Flood) yes .. and it is designed for 1024x600 .. not for 480x272 :) anyway, still nice to show off something ;) maybe install some handheld software on it instead of the usual stuff running Openbox / mplayer / gpe-gallery / alsaplayer / fennec like tangoGPS I can bring a GPS mouse if the board has USB (GPS receiver) * selckin (~selckin@gwickt.com) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Changing host) * selckin (~selckin@unaffiliated/selckin) a rejoint #ubuntu-be * selckin est parti (Excess Flood) I have a gps mouse too... I didn't buy it because of the graphics chip... (SiS IIRC) JanC : do you plan another irc coordination meeting for fosdem ? (so we can go ahead with the agenda) anyway, maybe everybody mail what you can bring to the mailing list ;) jean7491: going ahead is okay I think I have some idea of what will be available ☺ next item Antwerp, hobby & computerdagen (20/02/2010 – 21/02/2010) in cooperation with hcc regio vlaanderen https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Antwerp_2010-02-20_21 nero_ : do you have something to say ? we still need additional volunteers I might go there on Saturday (or maybe Sunday), but not 2 days are there some volunteers from regio Antwerp? I'll be there 2 days I guess there is a very limited response to the calls i launched, let's hope at least 2 volunteers per day will appear ward will certainly come 20/02 who's ward? Jan Bongaerts 1 day sat. or sun. ward de ridder, see wiki i'll contact jan b. about which day he comes K nero_: the "HCC testbank" at dipro fairs, is that your HCC group ? If JanC could help on Saturday and Jan B on Sunday HCC testbank is a Dutch group afaik I'll ask the dipro people ☺ * selckin (~selckin@unaffiliated/selckin) a rejoint #ubuntu-be okay, next topic I suppose? nero_ please contact me for material, if necessary next dipro fair brugge 28/02 see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Brugge_2010-02-28 preparation will start in the next days next topic 2 - Promotion material Update of promotion material: any new idea ? Comment about the proposal to burn CD's for Ubuntu-be ? See last week report (in the wiki) I can help for creating ISO .. if needed main question is who will initiate and be in charge of this project ? burning is not the problem, but obtaining enough blanco CD's is more difficult the main thing to decide currently is how to finance it (both burning & pressing) who talk about sponsor last meeting ? sponsoring is one way, making people to pay is another ☺ I agree .. sponsoring : we are sure about income, ... selling the cd's = we hope to succeed ! if we want to get pressed CDs, then a minimum amount would be needed indeed dammed, am I late? any idea about cost ? * wamukota est parti (Quit: Ex-Chat) and experience wit potential sponsors ? pressed CDs is only appropriate for LTS releases imo lucid is lts .. no ? nero_: ubuntu-fr presses CDs for all releases we could buy some of these for ubuntu-be if we want * hagar1 (~test@78-22-176-19.access.telenet.be) a rejoint #ubuntu-be if we want to sell them instead of giving away Does ubuntu-nl and ubuntu-de burn CD too ? but they have a much bigger area to serve true ☺ +1 :) ubuntu-nl doesn't (but they might buy some from us if we make them) ubuntu-de, I don't know, but I could ask has there be done some quantity estimation by release in the past? btw , I hate cd .. usbkey ( ubuntu / framakey ) is better but more expensive giving away usb keys is certainly no option ;) what about our experience with sponsors for 8.04lts in 2008 ? no giving away , for sure .. :P I'm not sure we can get the same sponsor again I would have to ask Bart what was the cost for that release? no, just share experience and estimate what is possible http://www.enventelibre.org/produit/framakey-ubuntu-fr-remix maybe we can do the same .. * AndChat| est parti (Quit: Bye) it's an idea... nero_: i can try to find the price for the hardy cd's in the ubuntu-nl wiki pages, one moment please it's on the wiki? JanC: the closed part of the wiki i think found it €475 for 1000 cd's so, that's < 50 cent for a CD siegie: was that including something to put them in? (I don't remember how they were :P ) There was a plastic sleeve arround them, ah, right and some sponsors logo's on the cd but i never saw it * hagar1 (~test@78-22-176-19.access.telenet.be) a quitté #ubuntu-be somebody was also going to ask for prices in Morocco ;) nightrid3r but I'm not sure that's a good solution (transport/time etc.) And legally we will have to pay taxes and custom fee. unless it's half the price or such :-) mongolito404: his company does a lot of business with & in morocco apparently, so I guess he would know how much it would cost i propose to continue at the next meeting, with more information on cost and sponsors (from bart and other sources) they heave trucks driving to & from there regularly etc. have ok but we would need some guarantee fro mhim still ☺ we continue next week ? ok topic 3 support points map status mongolito404 ? I've something ready to test (not map, just list) JanC: in marocco there no €0,12 auvibel tax? Now I need an host where to host a test site PHP 5.2+ Testers to test the stuff I install there Some time to actually install it can someone help mongolito404 ? I can let you a server, if that is ok ;) you can't test on the ubuntu server? but is a centos one and is used for something else ubuntu-be server I mean? I need an host and I don't have time to do any sysadmin task but I'll ask for some tools I'm used to use. IE. Nothinf fancy. recent bzr and rsync and PHP as cli JanC: It is always long to have something on Ubuntu-be.org server. Cedric is always busy. I don't blame him. I can get you bzr etc and try to set up a nice env for you And I can't take the responsability to be root and install stuff by myself but again, you have to deal with rpm etc.. As I said, I don't have time to do sysadmin stuff. And certainly not to learn rpm-fu while I used to deb-fu (on Ubuntu) * XiaoShiZi est parti (Quit: Ik ga weg) can give you a small vps if its just testing stuff well, I can give you a hand with the sysadmin, that is nto a problem I can "aptitude install" stuff and edit lighttpd/apache2 configuration cleanly (ie. in a separate file in /etc/apache2/site-available for instance). I can offer server and sysadmin thingy, that's is all :P maybe selckin's VPS is easiest then? Yes mongolito404 : can you continue directly with selckin and mandel ? I know I sound picky but I really want to focus on the code. Yes so we can go ahead with topic 4 – things living in the mailing list - reapproval the procedure for re-approval-application of our loco team is started ... the loco council meeting about the re-approval of our loco team is planned on 16/02 at 21.00 hr. all members of the loco team are invited to take part to the meeting on irc #ubuntu-meeting the reapproval page can use some additions from people who have been around longer (I will look some thing up myself and add them after FOSDEM) 16/2 is a Tuesday BTW I'll add some info about the website the draft is available in the wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ReapprovalApplication2010-Draft, but indeed not complete ... other question to complete the draft : what were the actions of Ubuntu-be in relation with "non-profit, and inter-governmental institutions" since 2006 ?  What about schools ? hoping JanC will gather info at fosdem ! comment on this ? nobody use edubuntu in belgium ? I know some schools do (the LTSP stuff) well, I heard soem schools do ☺ maybe if we could contact them and this in the wiki ? (add) jean7491: I think one school near where you live uses Edubuntu ? at the other side of the park ☺ St-Jozef aka VKIOB or whatever their name is now i see the school, but never had contact with ! well, I think it's their primary school that uses it but that's only what I heard not sure even what school (they have several in Ostend & Bredene) anyway, one thing we should do one day is compile a list of schoosl & companies using Ubuntu ☺ Is ubuntu-be involved in the use of ubuntu at that school. Otherwise, this seems unfair to present it as an achievement. mongolito404: it shouldn't be listed on that page we should compile a separate list for that ;) ok i'm just wondering what ubuntu-be did, not the rest were we are not involved in i propose next item : last week suggestion of a monthly report (following the rule in the wiki) I'm totally for it. 1+ If we start to do it, I'll report my work on the wiki myself. it wil make reapproval in 2 years from now much easier ;) and it can be short, just pointing to longer reports if useful * Guest75089 est parti (Quit: Ex-Chat) two advantages : regularly summary of ubuntu-be life, and our activities will be better known by ubuntu community, but ... more work ;-) the problem, who will do it ? is there a volunteer ? no problem if there are more than 1 volunteer ! A volunteer for what ? Basic maintenance of the wiki pages I guess. I like to involve more in ubuntu-be .. but my english is crappy ( no comment on my dutch ) .. So not so easy Maintenance of the page does not invovle much writing ( btw , you do a amazing job jean7491 ) It looks more like repeating copy/pasting every month And probably wiki markup cleanup A motivated person with some spare time could probably automated half the work you know https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TeamReports ? and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BuildingCommunity/TeamReporting/HowTo ? Yes And I'm comfortable with wiki markup not sure it's so easy to automate .. The truth is I'm too lazy and I forget to easily to commit to doing this each month. and not everything (about event or action) is in the wiki ... The idea is not the ave a single person responsible of reporting everything in the wiki. Anyone can and should edit the report. uhu, and maybe a monthly reminder...? to the ML I mean IMHO, the maintainer job is to clean it, create/updae the pages each month and bug people (on the ML, here, be mail, etc.) every month. Don't know if I'm the good one but maybe I can try do help on this .. And make everyone feel responsible of the report so that when something in the ML should be added, there is always someone to do it. And not always the same person doing all the edit. ADcomp: you don't know if you do it well until you try usually I 'm not a this part .. but I really want to do more .. I'm more confortable with hardware and python' code ;) This is the case for most of us. :D That's why they call us 'nerds' :p * t00r (~t00r@unaffiliated/t00r) a rejoint #ubuntu-be can we talk about this at Fosdem ? ADcomp : perhaps during the fosdem you will be convinced to try this task ! :D and we are now at the last topic - next meeting on 10/02/2010 at 21 h. ? agreed I'll try to be there, at least for updates on the map. ok I have mobile internet on my phone now... so I can be here on any time :D thanks to all for your participation ! see you next week ! have a good night ! Good night! selckin, mandel: Thank you for the server offers. I should mail you tomorrow. Good night everyone one. bye all .. good night laters * mongolito404 est parti (Quit: Leaving.) * mandel est parti (Quit: Leaving)
