BootCharting

Boot charts allow the developers to see how fast a machine is booting and to pinpoint where the bottlenecks are. People interested in helping out can install the bootchart package and report the results on this page.

The original announcement was here: http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2005-November/012965.html

Ubuntu 15.04 and later

systemd has bootcharting built in. To generate a chart, edit the "linux" line in the grub boot menu and append init=/lib/systemd/systemd-bootchart.

The boot chart will appear in /run/log/bootchart*.svg with a time stamp in the name.

Ubuntu 14.10 and earlier

  1. Install the bootchart and pybootchartgui packages, either through apt-get or Synaptic*

  2. Reboot your machine

The boot chart will appear in /var/log/bootchart/*.png with a time stamp in the name.

Uninstall these packages once you are done with bootcharting, as they cause a nontrivial slowdown during boot.

What to do with your bootchart

  1. Upload the bootchart to this wiki page here: Attach file to this wiki page

  2. Create a new row in one of the below tables
  3. If you see a regression in boot-up speed, compare your new bootchart with older ones and try to find the reason
  4. Report any problems to the developers
