Bug importances are the priorities given to a bug report in Launchpad to be worked on by each project involved.

  • Ubuntu Bug Control sets importance for the Ubuntu project.

  • The rest of projects use their own scale for importances, so their set priorities can be different.

Warning /!\ Before setting an importance, check the panel hasn't got errors that are obvious to you.

  • No one has set priority to it yet.

  • We don't know what importance the bug should have yet.

  • It's an idea for a new feature.

  • It's a requests to package software for Ubuntu.

  • It affect an experimental extension or non-essential feature.

  • It would only be fixed on a best-effort or outside-contribution basis.

  • It's non-trivial to implement (it should rather be written as a feature specification).

Low

  • It has an easy work-around.

  • It affects unusual end-user set up.

  • It affects a non-essential aspect of the package.

  • It has a moderate impact on a non-core package.

  • It's a cosmetic or usability issue that doesn't limit the functionality of a non-core package.

  • It's a non-ideal default configuration.

Medium

  • Most bugs fit this importance.

  • It has a moderate impact on a core package.

  • It has a severe impact on a non-core package.

  • It impacts accessibility of a non-core package.

  • It's a usability issue that doesn't limit the functionality of a core package.

  • It affects a non-essential hardware component (removable network card, camera, web-cam, music player, sound card, power management feature, printer...).

High

  • It's estimated to have severe impact on an small portion of Ubuntu users.

  • It makes a default Ubuntu installation unusable for some users.

  • It affects an essential hardware component (disk controller, built-in networking, video card, keyboard, mouse).

  • It's estimated to have a moderate impact on a large portion of Ubuntu users.

  • It prevents the package (or a dependent one) from functioning correctly at all.

  • It renders essential features or functionality of the package (or a dependent one) broken.

  • It impacts accessibility of a core package.

Critical

Warning /!\ This cannot be a papercut!

  • It has a severe impact on a large portion of Ubuntu users.

  • It causes data corruption.

  • It crashes the entire operating system.

  • It renders the system temporarily or permanently unusable.

  • It severely affects packages beyond the one that causes the flaw.
