Ubuntu (and derived) users Catalan community
Feel warmly welcome to the Catalan community. Here you will be able to find contents and interesting information if you are using this operating system or any of its flavours:
[http://www.ubuntu.com/ Ubuntu] (with [http://www.gnome.org/ Gnome] desktop environment) --> [http://www.ubuntu.com/download Download it ]
[http://kubuntu.org/ Kubuntu] (with [http://www.kde.org/ KDE] desktop environment) --> [http://kubuntu.org/download.php Download it]
[http://xubuntu.org/ Xubuntu] (with [http://www.xfce.org/ XFCE] desktop environment) --> [http://xubuntu.org/get Download it]
[http://edubuntu.org/ Edubuntu] (specially targeted to educational centers) --> [http://edubuntu.org/Download Download it]
If this is your first visit, you may feel a little bit confused because of the huge amount of information that is available about the Ubuntu operating system. You may also be a newbie in the GNU/Linux world and, probably, you don't have the necessary skills to use it properly. If this is your case, don't worry: the Catalan Ubuntu users Community is willing to help you!!
This is the Catalan Ubuntu users wiki front page, also known as Catalan "LoCo Team". This name has nothing to do with our mental health state though (LoCo in spanish means "crazy, mad"), it is the English acronym of "LOcal COmmunity Team". In the next sections you will be able to find information about how our volunteer group is structured, how you can ask for help or can get involved in our community and which are our regular activities. Keep on reading!!!
Ubuntu is based on the work of the well-known [http://www.us.debian.org/ Debian] ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian article at wikipedia.org]) project, a 100% free (as beer and speech) operating system founded by Ian Murdock in 1993 (when Linux kernel was only 2 years old) and developed since then by thousands of volunteers spreaded all over the world. If you are interested in learning more about the Ubuntu project and its relationship with the open source software community (specially with Debian) we suggest you begin with [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu wikipedia.org article]
Scope
Ubuntu Catalan User community gathers Catalan-speaking users of Ubuntu in all its varieties. The scope of the Catalan LoCo Team is mainly [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_countries the Catalan Countries], that is, the territories where Catalan is traditionally spoken, where members and volunteers are spread practically all over their geography.
The wiki
This wiki is a web space provided by Ubuntu which allows community members to add, delete or modify its contents very easily, without even knowing one single HTML tag. Therefore, creating new pages is very fast and the wiki becomes a very efficient tool for collective publishing. You are currently reading the English version of our front page. If you want to bookmark its location for visiting later, you should use [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CatalanTeam/En this link].
Mailing list
A mailing list is a tool that allows all emails you send to it to be redistributed automatically to all the mailing list subscribers. This provides the possibility to ask for help to multiple recipients or to stablish group discussions (offline).
The Ubuntu users Catalan community provides a mailing list through which you can ask for help. First of all, you will have to subscribe at [https://lists.lafarga.cpl.upc.edu/mailman/listinfo/ubuntucat-info this page]. After that, you will be able to make your questions sending an email to [ubuntucat-info@cpl.upc.edu] and you will receive the answers in the email address you specified when subscribing.
Forum
Some people may not feel comfortable with mailing lists and prefer to communicate with other people through web based forums, using a usual web browser. To meet their needs, we have also setup a forum. You can find it at [http://cat.ubuntuforums.org/] Join us!!
IRC chat channel
You can find the irc channel [:CatalanTeam/IRC: here]
If you need to take a look at the conversations, the logs are all in http://logs.ubuntu-eu.org/
Launchpad
Launchpad is a bunch of services for the (Edu/Ku/U/Xu)buntu distro and other projects sponsored by Canonical Ltd. Amongst the offered services, we want to emphasize:
Web translation for open soure applications ([https://translations.launchpad.net/ Rosetta])
Bug reporting and tracking tool ([https://bugs.launchpad.net/ Malone])
Assistance to the community members tool ([https://answers.launchpad.net/ Answers])
- Web space for community members to publish their information and track what they have done for the distribution.
- Technological resources for user groups (teams).
If you want to know more about us, you can visit the Ubuntu user Catalan community page at [https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu.cat this address]. There you will find a member list and will be able to watch the member's personal web pages. You will also find, at the left menu, some menus with the activities that the team is involved in.
