What is Ubuntu 6.06 LTS ("Dapper Drake") Beta?

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (codename DapperDrake) is the next version of the Ubuntu operating system. A "beta" testing version is currently available. This beta version is for testing only. Users who prefer a stable, supported system should use the most recent stable release, Ubuntu 5.10.

The final, stable version of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS will be released in June 2006.

For information about the Dapper beta release, see: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/dapperbeta

Upgrading from Ubuntu 5.10 ("Breezy Badger")

A new version of the Update Manager application has entered breezy-updates which can upgrade your entire system in a few simple steps.

To perform the upgrade:

  1. Update your system to ensure that you have the latest version of Update Manager and associated packages. The necessary versions are available from the breezy-updates repository, which is enabled by default.

  2. Run the following command (either via ALT-F2 or a terminal):

gksudo "update-manager -d"
  • The "-d" switch instructs Update Manager to consider pre-release versions, including this Beta release. Without this switch, only official, final releases will be considered.
  1. The Update Manager windows should display "Your system is up-to-date." Click the "Check" button.

If you have a working network connection, it should then inform you about a new release and offer to upgrade your system.

Upgrading from Ubuntu releases prior to 5.10

  1. Upgrade to Ubuntu 5.10 (see BreezyUpgradeNotes)

  2. Follow the above instructions for upgrading from 5.10
