About me
I work at Canonical's Global Support Services center in Montreal, Canada as a senior Ubuntu systems support analyst and technical trainer since November 2006. I am also an Ubuntu Member , an Ubuntu Certified Professional and Ubuntu Certified Instructor.
I am mostly interested in free technologies advocacy (including formats, content, licensing) & training for new users, with an emphasis on security.
I also work as an "open-technologies" advocate & coach (software , hardware, formats, licenses) in and around Montreal, QC, Canada, focusing on security and migration issues.

Hardware
HP Pavilion tx1220ca tablet laptop - wrose hardware to use with Ubuntu, pretty much everything needed tweaking. Best laptop to practice on when you do support
Samsung N120 netbook, recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04LTS - everything works out of the box except for brightness controls, that would be Bug #429351 which I filed when I first got this system
Home networking
Asus WL-500W 802.11n Multi-Functional Wireless Router hacked with OpenWRT and DD-WRT - I switch back and forth depending on my mood
- 2 x Linksys WRTGS2 smaller routers - I mesh them with the above more powerful router to cover all my living space
Neuros OSD open, embedded media center
Printing: HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-in-One Printer, a bit pricey for the model with scan-to-email and duplex features, but worth every penny. 100% supported and work out of the box in Ubuntu with HPLIP.
- Storage: DNS-323 small NAS (with 2x500GB). Didn't hack this one, I use NFS R/W mounts (for data) and Samba RO mounts (for media), everything worked out of the box but required some exploration
Bycycle: A BionX - equipped bicycle is my daily ride. Ok, this does not run Linux but is very hackable. As an early adopter I had my share of problems mostly due to my infinite ignorance combined with the incompetence and terrible customer service of local dealers.
Phone: Google Nexus One phone running Cyanogen's ROM based on Android.
Here's the list of applications I use, if you install AppBrain you can share yours too
Here's a list of free, open source software I started a while ago for the Android platform.
I also had an HTC Dream (aka G1) and Magic from Rogers, worse nightmare. See why Rogers sucks. The N1 is what the G1 should have been in the first place.
Chumby, a Linux-based multi-media hardware player. Used mostly to show pictures, jokes and remaining days until important dates at the office
Older stuff I don't use much anymore
Nokia N810 Internet tablet - I need to buy a new battery and install Android on this thing
Contributions
These are some of my past contributions to Ubuntu, there's also a more detailed list.
Bug reporting, documentation and translation for Ubuntu, particularly Xubuntu (XFCE)
I regularly blog about Ubuntu for Ubuntu-FR.org
Started UbuntuInLibraries, CanadianPress, also helping create the ColombianTeam and QuebecTeam LoCos
Ubuntu advocacy at local events (Ontario and Quebec). See ConferenceAppearances .
- I've installed Ubuntu (Hoary) to my 60 yr.-old parents in Colombia, 1 support call since Aug. 2005, a very convincing use case
I offer Ubuntu professional training and consulting in Quebec province - as listed in Marketplace - North America
- I regularly relay Ubuntu news and usecases to my business contacts and to the most active and visible organizations involved in free software and free computing in Quebec province. I have strong links to the local community (see organizations below).
Over the past year I have created a CD-insert in spanish and french to help promote Ubuntu through CDs - 900 copies estimated distribution, used by several LUGs in Europe and LatinAmerica.
Plans & vision for Ubuntu
I see Ubuntu becoming an essential tool to make Gnu/Linux more accessible to everyone, starting with my parents and close friends I feel it's a community that is open enough to let anyone participate to the extent of their abilities and availability.
As part of my professional but also personal activities, I plan on focusing on the following:
In all teams
- Keeping the Ubuntu community open and friendly, following the code of conduct
- Contributing and teaching others how to contribute through in tasks that will make the MOTU's work easier
- Actively encouraging people to register to Launchpad and document their participation
Encouraging participation in UbuntuInLibraries
In Quebec, as part of the Ubuntu-QC team
- Actively marketing and selling Ubuntu-related services locally:
- * Training
- * Servers install and support
- * Desktop migration and support
Becoming a liaison for local support & advocacy
- Participating or organazing events with Ubuntu mentions / presence
In Colombia, as part of the Ubuntu-CO team
Mentoring ElkinBotero (the team leader) and the members to officialize the team
- Actively monitoring and helping with the IRC channel, mailing list and initial web resources (forums, etc.)
