| Having been exposed to Windows 'features' for as long as I can remember in both personal and professional realms, I was on the look out for alternatives. I'd used Unix and Mac at university and I'd heard of Linux. After some Googling, I plumped for Ubuntu and I haven't looked back. I enjoy watching films either in the comfort of my own living room or at the cinema. Some of my favourite films include Event Horizon, Glory, Predator, Titanic and Unbreakable. I like travelling and have spent 3 months in Australia, 9 months in Germany and I've been to various other places on holiday with my favourite place being the Maldives. I'm fascinated with technology and spend many hours performing what I have termed 'geekery' :D . The last gadget I bought was a Nokia N900 - picked solely because it has the Maemo 5 (Fremantle) Linux-based operating system! Lastly, I find theoretical subjects, philosophy and reasoned debate very engaging. I read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins and found it to be really interesting and thought provoking so I have now picked up another of his books called The God Delusion. One of my favourite popular science books is A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. Why I Am Abandoning Ubuntu
I have used Ubuntu since Jaunty. I have now reached the point where I can no longer, in all good conscience, use it. Below are some of the reasons:
- Ridiculous Amazon/Facebook/BBC et al searches - ill-thought out and ill-implemented.
- Canonical riding roughshod over user's (read The Community's) privacy and concerns therein.
- Mark Shuttleworth: SABDFL - now becomes less tongue-in-cheek and decidedly more sinister.
- Unity.
- Lenses - get in the way and hinder me.
- HUD - I want a proper menu. If I wanted bells, whistles and shiny, shiny I'd have a Mac - and God knows I hate Apple!

I have moved over to Linux Mint Debian - and how refreshing it is!

I doubt I will ever use Ubuntu again.
