Having been exposed to Windows 'features' for as long as I can remember in both personal and professional realms, I was on the look out for alternatives. I'd used Unix and Mac at university and had heard of Linux. After some Googling, I plumped for Ubuntu and haven't looked back. After just one week of having a dual boot system I decided that Ubuntu (Karmic) was infinitely better than any Windows OS and got rid of the Windows partition completely.:

== Testing Interests ==

Having looked at the Activity List I am initially interested in testing the following areas:

  * ISO Testing (on my HP)

  * Laptop testing (on my HP)

  * General Testing (on my Lenovo and/or my HP)

I would rather not have to perform any fundamental changes to my Lenovo as that is my stable everyday personal laptop. I am happy to do pretty much anything to my HP.

== Hobbies & Interests ==

I weight train in my spare time and also enjoy bike riding. When I was fitter than I currently am I have previously cycled to the coast for charitable causes. The most I have cycled in a day is 120 miles. I enjoy watching films and lying in bed - often enjoyed simultaneously. I also like anything to do with technology and spend may hours performing what I have termed 'geekery'. Lastly, I find theoretical subjects, philosophy and reasoned debate very engaging. I am currently reading The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins. When I have the time I hope to read The God Dilemma and The Blind Watchmaker.

Why I Am Abandoning Ubuntu

I have used Ubuntu since Jaunty. I have now reached the point where I can no longer, in all good conscience, use it. Below are some of the reasons:

  • Ridiculous Amazon/Facebook/BBC et al searches - ill-thought out and ill-implemented.
  • Canonical riding roughshod over user's (read The Community's) privacy and concerns therein.
  • Mark Shuttleworth: SABDFL - now becomes less tongue-in-cheek and decidedly more sinister.
  • Unity.
  • Lenses - get in the way and hinder me.
  • HUD - I want a proper menu. If I wanted bells, whistles and shiny, shiny I'd have a Mac - and God knows I hate Apple!
  • Mark Shuttleworth/Canonical have lost the plot and are no longer listening to the needs and concerns of its user base and are doing what they want regardless. This seems completely against their former ethos and smacks of Microsoft mentality - treat your customers with contempt and dictate to them how they use their software.

I have moved over to Linux Mint Debian - and how refreshing it is!

Head over and see how much more of a productive environment this distro is.

I doubt I will ever use Ubuntu again.
