My testing rig is an Inspiron 1525 running various Ubuntu and CentOS5.4
The Inspiron 1525 is also my travelling setup, and so I try and keep up with dongle setups in /etc/ppp/peers<

can be done by creating appropriate .desktop files to ~/.local/share/applications/
by using seds along the lines of s/Exec=nautilus/Exec=thunar/g
The .desktop files you might create for full effect might be:
nautilus-folder-handler.desktop, nautilus-browser.desktop, nautilus-computer.desktop, nautilus-home.desktop, nautilus.desktop
