Getting Ubuntu Studio Disco Dingo (19.04)

Download a Disk Image

Check MD5SUM for the downloaded ISO

Changes for this release (compared to Cosmic Cuttlefish)

  • Ubuntu Studio Installer (formerly Ubuntu Studio Metapackage Installer) has been updated and adapted to:

    • Install metapackages or other items not installed (opted-out) during installation.
    • Install Ubuntu Studio's configuration and/or metapackages on top of an existing Ubuntu (flavor) installation.
      • This means Ubuntu Studio's tools and configuration can be used on any official flavor of Ubuntu.

      • NOTE: Derivitives of Ubuntu (Linux Mint, Kali Linux, etc.) are not supported.

  • Users will find new default themes for the Desktop Environment, Window Manager, and Icons.
    • GTK Theme: Materia
    • Icon Theme: Papirus (with Ubuntu Studio distro icons)
  • Wallpapers have been split into three packages:
    • ubuntustudio-wallpapers - the default installed wallpapers, including the wallpaper set from 18.10

    • ubuntustudio-wallpapers-xenial - wallpapers included in 16.04, 16.10, 17.04, 17.10, and 18.04

    • ubuntustudio-wallpapers-legacy - wallpapers included prior to 16.04

Audio

  • Ubuntu Studio Controls has been upgraded to Version 1.7. Many changes have been made for the Disco Release, and the following is a summary of some of those changes:

    • Ubuntu Studio Controls is now the preferred method for starting Jack. Please discontinue use of qjackctl for starting Jack. qjackctl can still be used for monitoring Jack if needed.

    • Many bug fixes
    • General graphical interface improvements
    • For more information about Ubuntu Studio Controls, see:
      • The README
      • The manpages for ubuntustudio-controls, autojack and ubuntustudio-system
  • Carla has been added to the default installation of Ubuntu Studio and to the Ubuntu Repositories.

    • Replaces jack-rack and adds more functionality.
    • Includes a graphical patchbay similar to Patchage
    • Bridges for Windows-compiled VST Plugins using WINE are available for installation (not installed by default) from the Ubuntu repositories.

Graphics

  • GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) upgraded to version 2.10.8
    • Please note that there are file incompatibilities between v2.8 and v2.10 which are important to note when sharing files with other people.
  • Krita upgraded to version 4.1.7

Current Version Of Main Multimedia Packages

Known Problems

  • There is an issue where Ubuntu Studio will freeze at boot when run inside a virtual machine. However, since Ubuntu Studio is not designed to run in a virtual machine for performance reasons, we do not support this method of using Ubuntu Studio. If you wish to try Ubuntu Studio, burn it to a DVD or run it from a USB drive.
  • A problem has been discovered related to this bug in xfce4-volumed where a user's hardware volume keys will not respond after restarting PulseAudio, such as when starting and stopping Jack. Only workaround is running the following in a terminal:

killall xfce4-volumed && xfce4-volumed

  • Ubuntu Studio uses the same XFCE desktop environment as the official Xubuntu release, and thus, may be affected by some of the same issues. This is also true of the core packages of the mainline Ubuntu release. You can see their release notes here (Xubuntu) and here (Ubuntu)

Support

Ubuntu Studio Disco Dingo (19.04) will be supported for 9 months until January 2020. If you need Long Term Support, it is recommended you use Ubuntu Studio Bionic 18.04 with the Ubuntu Studio Backports PPA instead.
