Webcameras

Webcams normally use the [http://www.exploits.org/v4l/ video for linux (v4l)] framework. The Ubuntu kernel has support for v4l compiled into it.

You also need a driver for your camera. If it does not just work when you start e.g. xawtv, a good starting point to look for your camera is: http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/ (best use the search field with your manufacturer name). Some nice people have also made an application to build the latest driver for some Webcam's. [https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Webcam EasyCam]

Works out of the box with Ekiga but not as a V4L device, therefore doesn't work with some other apps (doesn't work with Mercury Messenger for example). Using EasyCam to get a V4L driver gives terrible results

By default, the spca5xx driver is used for this camera, but for some reason causes a kernel panic. Using the gspca driver (not included with ubuntu, must be downloaded from http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html and compiled), this problem does not occur any more. Though you must unload the spca5xx driver after you plug in the camera and then manually load the gspca driver.
