Who I am

My name is Hervé Fache, I am French, and I live in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil.

My knowledge level

I am an expert in Linux systems and network administration. I am also an advanced Windows user.

Where I installed Kubuntu

  • an old laptop, running Breezy, using XFCE (used occasionally)
  • a server, running Breezy (24/7, my main desktop)
  • a desktop, running Dapper (used too little, and too much on its Windows side!)
  • a MacIntosh G3, running Breezy (rarely used, anyone wants to buy?)

My participation

I had written a very short page on how to enable the root user: EnableRootLogin. It has since been removed and linked to RootSudo. The original page has been archived here: http://lucidia.net/blog/KubuntuEnableRootLogin.html, just in case...

Also, I have now moved my server from Slackware to Kubuntu, and I have tried to keep a record of what I have done, in case it can help others... That page can be found here: http://lucidia.net/blog/KubuntuFromSlackware.html

My quick advices

  • replace that %$?^& dhclient (dhcp3-client) with the much superior dhcpcd (config in /etc/dhcpc/config)

  • set Xorg priority to -5 to play DVDs smoothly
  • use nfs-kernel-server rather then nfs-user-server
  • use libjasper-runtime for Kopete to support webcam calls
  • use Mozilla plugins (including flash) for Konqueror too
  • Use apt-cacher, not apt-proxy.
  • when lost, try the unofficial guide: http://ubuntuguide.org/
