With the first of each pair, the center of the star is aligned with the x-height of the letters (look at the upper end of the "u"). With the second of each pair the same is true for the upper vertical stroke of the star. The first option resembles the position of the circle in the main Ubuntu logo. The second option with lower placement is just an obvious alternative that makes the logo more compact. Now with the distance of several hours since I made them, I would advice to choose the higher placement for consistency with the main logo and because it looks more optimistic."
