Preface

This page gives an overview about the language support status of certain Asian languages. The list of languages per territory is not exhaustive. I tried to list at least all official languages per territory (which has a TLD) and in some cases also minority languages. However there are probably many more minority languages available, which might get added in the future.

To determine the locale for a language, we need to know:

Language support is categorized into several tasks, which include translations (l10n), typing (input method), rendering (complex scripts often have problems with this), locale availability and font support (for some languages, font support is not sufficient to handle all kind of ligatures, especially for complex scripts).

Depending on the script a language uses, there is a certain difficulty to implement full language support for that language. Easier ones include Latin, Cyrillic and Greek (single character based scripts, ligatures and special rendering in certain circumstances are not required for the text to be legitimate). Arabic and Indic scripts require contextual shaping of characters and often have many ligatures, many of them are required for a text to be legitimate. Some scripts also use a different orientation (e.g right to left or top to bottom), thus the rendering part will be of high importance here. Many Asian scripts require additional input methods, because either not all combinations fit on a normal keyboard layout (e.g. CJK languages), or there have been established multiple ways to type the characters (e.g. phonetic input methods, based on a transliteration mostly using Latin script, like for Indic languages, Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese).

For easy to render scripts, like Latin, Cyrillic or Greek, many font packages are available and therefor don't get mentioned here.
