Current Installation

  • Kubuntu Dapper Drake 6.06 Alpha release, updated to Flight 6

Current Issues

  • is getting the Broadcom 4318 to work using bcm43xx-fwcutter considered a major issue?

Hardware details

  • CPU: AMD Turion 64 ML-40
  • Onboard Memory: 512MB DDR-SDRAM (not shared with video card); expandable to 2GB
  • Motherboard: CPU-Z reports it as "HP model 30A4 49.38; ATI RS482 chipet rev. 01; ATI SB400 southbridge"
  • BIOS: currently F.33A, firmware dated 2006-02-24
  • Video: ATI Radeon Xpress 200M with 128MB dedicated memory
  • Audio: Conexant AC-Link (AC 97)
  • Wifi: Broadcom 4318; works if ndiswrapper >= v1.12 is installed with bcmwl5.sys v4.10.40.1 driver file (have tried bcm43xx-fwcutter v004 but does not work)

  • note: the above is my personal hardware configuration; more hardware devices details to be added upon request

Notes

  • two error messages are always reported during bootup with recent kernel versions 2.6.15-xx-k7. I have pasted the relevant lines from syslog:

localhost kernel: [4294669.668000] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 7 of bridge 0000:00:05.0

localhost kernel: [4294669.668000] PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 8 of bridge 0000:00:05.0

  • it appears to be related to the ATI chipset. potentially relevant output from lspci:

0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS480 Host Bridge (rev 01)

0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5a3f

0000:00:05.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5a37

0000:00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB Host Controller

  • but what is this "0000:00:05:0/unknown device 5a37"?
