Current Issues and Bugs

Notes and Workarounds

Touchpad

The workaround for the "bad state" issue (kernel < 2.6.20) is no longer necessary (as of Ubuntu 7.04 and newer). Touchpad "freezes" in (apparently) random intervals, the cursor remains in the upper left corner and is unmovable. Solution: reboot

["Touchpad - turned off while typing: no (Ubuntu)" -> did you try [http://gsynaptics.sourceforge.jp GSynaptics] in Gnome? -- [:Przemkus]]

  • Yes, and it doesn't have such option - -- AzraelNightwalker DateTime(2007-10-17T07:59:20Z)

  • I've checked again, there is and option in KSynaptics that disables touchpad when typing, but I'm not sure it works like it's meant to work (It doesn't in fact). I decided to change status of this feature to "not working". -- [:Przemkus]]]

Testing "gsynaptics" and "ksysnaptics". ~Alex

Graphics

Also the graphics card is now reported as different model - lspci says its a ATI Technologies Inc RS485 [Radeon Xpress 1100 IGP]. RS482 in previous releases.

xserver-xorg-video-ati

Open Ati driver has 3D acceleration but it doesn't work stable - it gives bad rendering on OpenArena 0.7.0 and PlanetPenguinRacer. (see above bugs). ~Azrael

xorg-driver-fglrx

Restricted drivers (ATI) are proposed and work Don't use fglrx if it's not necessary, cause it hangs while logging off and the brightness +/- special keys not always work. Kubuntu ~Przemkus

Desktop Effects

Desktop effects work only with fglrx and xgl. Install "xserver-xgl" and "xorg-driver-fglrx".

Dualhead

The driver should be xrandr capable. This will be tested soon. ~Alex

Volume control

There is a problem (in all linux distros) with non-linear volume scale. All control of volume depends on range about 50%-100% of volume control, so concerning laptop hardware volume control buttons it's quite irritating Wink ;)

Microphone

To make my mic work I've added

    options snd-hda-intel model=hp position_fix=1 enable=yes

at the end of

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and then I've set Capture and Mic Boost to the max in Alsa Mixer.

To make mic (both internal and external) work you have to go to the sound mixer, choose "edit > preferences" in the menu, tick "capturing", and then put the capturing slider to the max on the "recording" tab.

Card reader

To fix the card reader I've added a small script to execute in runlevels 3-5:

setpci -s 02:04.2 4c=0x22 #if "0x22" doesn't work use "22" instead

You should substitute the number "02:04.2" with the one shown in

lspci |grep storage

The card reader has been working out of the box since release 7.04. ~Azrael

Battery info

To make battery status update properly I had to unload psmouse module before each restart or shutdown or ACPI would get corrupted (see http://home.no/slazz/nx7400/#badstate ). I've added

modprobe -r psmouse

to /etc/init.d/halt and /etc/init.d/reboot just before 'halt' and 'reboot' commands. This also fixes sluggish BIOS startup. If you install a BIOS update F06 or newer then this workaround is not needed.

Suspend

I've also noticed that after I resume from sleep or hibernation, the laptop speakers stay turned on, even when headphones are plugged in. I tried to fix it by putting:

MODULES="snd_hda_intel"

in /etc/default/acpi-support (near "# Add modules to this list to have them removed before suspend and reloaded" line) but it didn't always work.

Hibernate

Powersaving

If you want to have a longer battery life then you should enable laptop mode - edit /etc/default/acpi-support and change "ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=false" to "ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true".

WLAN

In previous Ubuntu releases my wifi card has been reported as Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 UART (rev 01). Gutsy reports it as Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11a/b/g (rev 01) (notice the BCM chip number).

ndiswrapper

You will need to use ndiswrapper to run wireless connection. My wifi works only with ndiswrapper. Open driver (bcm43xx) does not work. Ironically on Debian Lenny (testing) it's the opposite - ndiswrapper doesn't work while bcm43xx does work. ~Azrael

bcm43xx

Wireless works with open driver since 7.10. Firmware extraction is required. This can be automated with restricted manager. An existing network connection is required for downloading if the firmware blob is not on disk.

WPA (WiFi Protected Access)

  • Works with open driver. Tested with eduroam academic network. It is necessary to load two kernel modules:
  • ieee80211_crypt_ccmp

  • ieee80211_crypt_tkip

Then login with [:KNetworkManager] or NetworkManager.

  • Works with open driver. Tested with La Fonera without loading anything before connecting.
  • Works with windows driver through ndiswrapper out of the box.

Thermal management

There are problems with sleep and hibernation, the cpu fan doesn't start after waking laptop up, so it is necessary to turn the fan on manually by executing this script:

# public domain 2007 - Markus Brechtel (chaotika) <markus@b-r-e-c-h-t-e-l.net>
# This script makes the fans wich ran before suspend come up after resume again on HP nx6325.

acpi -t
cat /proc/acpi/fan/*/*

for fanstate in $( ls /proc/acpi/fan/*/state ); do
        echo 0 > $fanstate;
done

cat /proc/acpi/fan/*/*

Bluetooth

To make bluetooth fully work you have to install gnome-vfs-obexftp (from universe).

AES2501

BIOS update

Hint for the BIOS update: The BIOS from the HP site comes wrapped in a .EXE file. However, you do NOT need Windows in order to update your NX6325. Go and download the FreeDos installer BIOS version from the HP website. Use cabextract (install it with "sudo apt-get cabextract" in a terminal window) to extract the files; there is then a folder containing a .ISO file which is actually a bootable CD image (in my case its exact name is ROM.ISO). Right-click it and burn the file ROM.ISO to CD. Then boot from this CD and follow the instructions.

Guidelines for this Wiki document

Please do not add Kubuntu (and other derivatives) when the same Ubuntu version is already added to the table. For example: Kubuntu 7.04 has exactly the same kernel and drivers as Ubuntu 7.04 so everything that works in Ubuntu 7.04 will work in Kubuntu 7.04 and vice versa. Same for things that don't work. The same reasoning applies when keeping i386 and amd64 seperated.

However, with that said. Some functionality depends on the userspace which differs between ubuntu and kubuntu.

Info about Ubuntu 6.06 and 6.10 has been cut out because it's practically obsolete. Only 7.04 and 7.10 should be left. -- AzraelNightwalker DateTime(2007-10-02T11:19:52Z)
