Resido en San Carlos y Punta del Este, Uruguay, médico cardiólogo, miembro fundador de la SUIS (Sociedad Uruguaya de Informática en la Salud), encargado de informática médica en AMECOM, mas conocida como La Asistencial Medica de Maldonado (4a. Institución Médica del pais, luego del CASMU, La Asociación Española y la Médica Uruguaya) integrante de FEMI o Federación Médica del Interior, una gran red médica que cuenta al 30/9/09 con aproximadamente 1.800.000 afiliados. Integro el Grupo de usuarios Ubuntu del Uruguay.

I live in San Carlos and Punta del Este, Uruguay, cardiologist, founding member of the SUIS (Sociedad Uruguaya de Informática en la Salud), in charge of medical informatics in AMECOM, better known as La Asistencial Médica de Maldonado (4th. Medical Institutition country, following the CASMU, the Asociación Española and the Médica Uruguaya) or integral FEMI Medical Federation of the Interior, a large medical network which has the 30/9/09 with approximately 1,800,000 members. I am a member of the Ubuntu User Group in Uruguay.

Instalación, configuración y mantenimiento de cada nueva versión de Ubuntu en los 7 equipos utilizados para consultas, email, etc. por los 143 médicos de AMECOM (La Asistencial), y L.A.Emergencia (Servicio de Ambulancias de Emergencias y Traslados de La Asistencial) la mayor red medica de Maldonado, Uruguay, integrante de FEMI (FEderacion Medica del Interior). Instalación, o ayuda en la instalacion y configuración a demanda en laptops y equipos privados de médicos. Orientación personal u online del uso de Ubuntu, configuración de conexiones a Internet, Routers, recursos para Administración Remota (dyndns, ddclient, xvnc4viewer, etc.) En lo administrativo (180 PCs) la Institución ha migrado a OpenOffice.org Dos de estos equipos son críticos, porque se utilizan por parte de Ginecólogos y Parteras para confeccionar online con el Ministerio y el BPS el Certificado de Recién Nacido Vivo, base administrativa de la identidad de los uruguayos. Esos equipos tienen instalado Linux Ubuntu.

El Ministerio de Salud Pública persigue implantar la Historia Clínica Electrónica o Informatizada en el Sistema Nacional Integrado de Salud o SNIS lo cual implica que los médicos y técnicos deberán escribir los documentos (de la mayor importancia técnica y jurídica) en Servidores Centrales del MSP. Hemos demostrado que este trabajo puede realizarse perfectamente con Linux ya que las aplicaciones para trabajar online proporcionadas por el ministerio son programas hechos en Java. Actualmente (Octubre 2009) Parteras y Ginecólogos han de llenar el Certificado de Recién Nacido Vivo online desde los diversos puntos del país en el Servidor del MSP. Hemos configurado los equipos para que esta tarea pueda realizarse con Linux Ubuntu. Sin dicho Certificado el Recién Nacido no puedo obtener su Cédula de Identidad, ni realizarse los trámites correspondientes en el BPS. Las Instituciones se ven en la situación de utilizar Linux y Software Libre (que funciona perfectamente bien) o invertir sumas astronómicas en Licencias de Software Privativo, Sistemas Operativos, Antivirus, etc., recursos que no podrán ser asignados a medicamentos, terapias y sueldos del personal de la salud.

Comencé a utilizar GNU/Linux con Slackware en 1994. Hasta el 6 de enero de 1996 no existió Internet (Adinet con la vieja Red de acceso telefónico X25) en Uruguay, y el email se cursaba mediante la Red FidoNet en la cual participaba como Sysop de un Nodo de Maldonado, Asistencial Médica BBS. La comunidad telemática a principios de los 90 de Maldonado (previo al advenimiento de Internet) era una de las más bulliciosas de Uruguay. En 1996 Rodolfo Pilas, del UYLUG (Grupo de Usuarios Linux del Uruguay) junto con otros compañeros me instalaron SuSE para un Servidor y Desktop del Hospital Alvariza del MSP de Uruguay, del cual era Director. Fue el primer Hospital con un Sistema Linux que se utilizó para Farmacia y diseñamos en Geocities el primer Sitio Web Medico de MSP de Uruguay en Internet.

El sitio de La Asistencial fue subido a la Red Chasque el 6 de Enero de 1996 y fue el primer Web Site médico de Uruguay, 6 meses antes que el CASMU. Diseñamos el primer Sitio del MSP y de La Asociación Española con Hot Dog Pro y Editores de Texto ASCII en SuSE y Red Hat. Luego experimentamos con casi todas las distros, especialmente Red Hat, Fedora (que hoy dia es la base del Sistema GNU/Linux Sugar del Proyecto Ceibal) Mandriva, con grandes dificultades en ofimatica y manejo de Impresoras, hasta que tuvimos algunos exitos con RedHat. Linux Mint, una distribución muy amigable basada en Ubuntu, fue un gran éxito entre los médicos, y con esta distribución por primera vez el los usuarios (que disponían de PCs con dual-boot Linux-Windows XP, prefería Linux a MS-Windows, y curiosamente, un gran número de usuarios no percibían que estaban utilizando un sistema diferente al corrientemente difundido en el mundo comercial de pago. El Servidor de la Institución siempre fue un Debian Sarge, con Apache.

Desde que se inicio Ubuntu, tuvimos la impresión de que era el camino práctico, amigable y capaz de conquistar la aprobación de las Comisiones Directivas empresariales, y actualmente podemos realizar todas las tareas de informatica con Ubuntu Jaunty. En mi consulta personal realizo informes de valoración cardiaca, preoperatorios, estado de marcapasos, ergometrias (electrocardiogramas de esfuerzo), ecografías cardiacas, etc. con Ubuntu, y mas de 100 médicos de AMECOM utilizan los PCs con Jaunty + Mac4Lin. Con Ubuntu, es muy sencillo y gratuito, para un Administrador de Sistemas, realizar el mantenimiento remoto de equipos geográficamente muy distribuidos.
