Lubuntu PPC testing

Welcome to this area, as the Lubuntu team do not have many people with access to either Mac-Intel or Power PC computers, this page is designed to hold as much information as we have on the testing of Macs.

Lubuntu are committed to Mac releases, but we can only achieve this if those people with Mac machines can let our small dev team and the greater Ubuntu team know of problems. To this end, may we ask that you join both our main mailing list, but also our Lubuntu-QA team You will be quickly approved for the QA team, and then we ask that you subscribe to the qa mailing list. It is the QA team who will be liasing as best we can, the release of PPC on Lubuntu.

Note that we don't just need people to test and send messages. What we need is official, documented testing during the alphas, betas, and final release images, as well as dailies. Go to Testing for more info.

Quite simply? We need your to help us to support these releases.

As of 14.04, effort is focused on having LTS-only releases of PPC.

Add your machine to the database

Please spend a few minutes to enter the details of your machine here. It will allow the teams to help the developers better. If we're having a problem that affects a particular video card, for example, we'll be able to quickly find the folks we need to help us troubleshoot further.

How to test on non-PPC architectures (using qemu)

Preparing the system

  • Install qemu : sudo apt-get install qemu-system
  • Create a virtual hard drive using this command (here 20GB, but you can change the size with the last argument of the command) : qemu-img create powerpc_hd.img -f qcow2 20G
  • Download openbios-ppc .deb from Debian : http://packages.debian.org/fr/sid/all/openbios-ppc/download

  • Install it using gdebi, or dpkg -i

Launch Live ISO

  • Download any powerpc ISO
  • Boot the ISO with this command : qemu-system-ppc -cpu G4 -M mac99 -m 512 -bios /usr/share/openbios/openbios-ppc -cdrom quantal-desktop-powerpc.iso -hda powerpcimage -boot order=d
    • -m 512 : is the memory for the live system (512 Mo here)
    • -cpu G4 : is the CPU type emulated
    • quantal-desktop-powerpc.iso is the name of the ISO

Additional comments

  • System may be slow; it's a consequence of the emulation. Better to test on real hardware!
  • When using live ISO, be sure to wait until it's loaded completely, a black background may be shown for a long time (several minutes) until the system is completely loaded.

amd64+mac (deprecated)

This image has been removed from Ubuntu. It is believed that all machines this affected should have firmware updates that render it unnecessary. If you can't boot the amd64 image, please check for firmware updates for your machine and then try again. If there is a problem, file a bug.

For the sake of history:

This image was targeted at machines that used EFI rather than UEFI or BIOS to boot. This mostly affected early Intel Macs, but there are other non-Apple machines that use this same system. That's the only difference with the amd64 image. More info can be found here.

Note that it is mostly the earliest of Intel Macs (about 2006) that use EFI. Starting with Intel's EFI 1.0 as a base, UEFI was created. From that point on, one can assume that the standard image would work fine. Furthermore, early Macs have firmware updates available outside of Software Update that will make them capable of using a standard image.

There are some relevant bugs on this subject, one of which calls for the end of the +mac images while the other one discusses the difficulty of booting the standard image.
