 * learning by reading documentation, trying things out and not being afraid to ask questions
 * being highly motivated
 * having a knack for trying to make things work

No. The mentorship program is absolutely and totally optional. It is intended as an extra bit of help for people who want it. You are encouraged to dive in and help out right away. You can always ask for help on the MOTU mailling list or the #ubuntu-motu IRC channel.
