What Are Universe Packages

The elements of Ubuntu are known as packages. These can be application programs such as word processors and web browsers, or utilities such as font configuration. Ubuntu has over 1000 officially suported packages. To add packages, have a look at SynapticHowto.

There is also a way of using other packages which are not officially supported by Ubuntu, but may work anyway: these packages are said to be in the Ubuntu universe. Inexperienced users are not recommended to use packages from universe, but they are there for those who wish to use them.

Adding Universe to your system using Synaptic

Adding universe to your Ubuntu system will give you access to many more packages.

  1. Select the System menu at top of screen, then Administration then Synaptic Package Manager.

  2. When the program starts, click on the Settings menu, and select Repositories.

  3. In the new dialog that opens, click the Add button on the right side of the dialog.

  4. The Edit Repository dialog will come up. Check the box that says Community maintained (Universe).

  5. Click OK to add the new repository

  6. Click OK to close the Repositories dialog and save your change.

  7. Synaptic will then prompt you to refresh your package database. Once this is complete, you will be able to install packages from universe on your system.

Asking For Packages To Be Included In Universe

Ubuntu is based on [http://www.debian.org/ Debian GNU/Linux], and there are many packages included in Debian. Not all Debian packages are included in universe, either because they're in Debian's contrib or non-free sections (in which case you're more likely to find them in Ubuntu's multiverse), because they missed the last Ubuntu upstream version freeze, or because they failed to build for some reason. If you know of a package you think should be included in universe, have a look at UniverseCandidates.

Reporting Bugs Against Universe Packages

Bugzilla only accepts bug reports against supported packages. To report a bug against a package in universe, you should contact the universe maintainers team, also known as [:MOTU].
