Queste note di rilascio forniscono una panoramica della versione e illustrano i problemi noti con Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwal) e le altre varianti.

Panoramica della versione

Per gli utenti PC, Ubuntu 11.04 ora supporta portatili, postazioni desktop e netbook con una grafica unica e sensazionale basata su una shell chiamata "Unity". Questa versione ha superato e eliminato Ubuntu Netbook Edition per tutti i netbook.

Le immagini di sviluppo sono fornite da Texas Instruments (TI) per piattaforma ARM, in modo particolare i sistemi di sviluppo "PandaBoard" e "BeagleBoard".

Ubuntu Server 11.04 ha reso più semplice allestire server e ridurne il consumo energetico. Ubuntu Server 11.04 per UEC e EC2 ha un nuovo kernel e un avvio migliorato e opzioni di configurazione.

Nuove funzionalità

Unity è diventato il gestore di desktop predefinito. Applicazioni Aggiornate

Ubuntu 11.04 ha con sè il recente Firefox 4.0 come browser web predefinito. LibreOffice 3.3.2 ha sostituito OpenOffice.org in 11.04 come suite d’ufficio predefinita. Banshee 2.0 ha sostituito Rhythmbox come riproduttore musicale predefinito ed è stato integrato con il sound menu.

Miglioramenti nel ‘cuore’

11.04 ha un kernel basato sul principale kernel stabile (2.6.38.2). Alcuni dei punti salienti includono accettazione a monte di AppArmor, support per Intel IPS (Intelligent Power Sharing ), rimozione del grande blocco kernel, miglioramento dei filesystem Btrfs, Ext4 e XFS, e naturalmente i consueti aggiornamenti driver e il supporto di nuovo hardware. X.org 1.10.0 e Mesa 7.10.1 sono le nuove versioni incluse in 11.04. Il server X include un prototipo dell’estensione per gli input multitouch (XInput 2.1). Anche gli strumenti Qt includono un supporto in via di sviluppo per il multitouch. La toolchain GNU è passata alla base gcc 4.5 per i386, AMD64, ARM omap3/omap4 e l’architettura PowerPC. Tutti i software principali sono stati costruiti e sono installabili con Python 2.7. 1.16.0 dpkg-pre ci mantiene aggiornati con i cambiamenti in vista del prossimo rilascio di Debian 1.16.0 dpkg, così come del lavoro nella versione attuale per il lavoro in multiarchitettura. Upstart è stato aggiornato alla versione 0.9.7-1. As a response to long standing community requests, an Ubuntu Headless image is now available for omap3 and omap4 hardware. This image is fully set up to be run and configured using the serial port and contains a minimal command line install. A detailed list of features and known issues on ARM images can be found here.

Ubuntu Server

Immagini Cloud

cloud-init has been updated to 0.60. This version includes support for resizing of the root file system at first boot, adds minimal OVF transport (iso) support and allow setting of hostname when first booting. Rightscale support has been added to cloud-config and cloud-init.

Cloud images now have support for being run as an LXC guest.

Some of the supporting technologies that have been packaged and included are, Cassandra 0.7.0, ZeroMQ, Membase, and XtraBackup.

Images are verified to run against OpenStack (nova) cloud.

Kubuntu

Kubuntu 11.04 sports the latest KDE software including KDE Platform and Plasma 4.6.2.

Kubuntu now provides a working Samba file sharing module that lets you add and manage shares from the folder's Properties dialogs.

The new Language Selector module allows you to add, remove, and manage system languages directly from System Settings.

An updated system-config-printer-kde brings a number of bug fixes to Kubuntu's printer management tool.

Xubuntu

Xubuntu wallpaper has been updated for this release. The wallpaper is designed to integrate well with the new graybird theme.

The installation slide show has been updated for Natty Narwhal, and really displays the best of Xubuntu.

The Elementary Xubuntu icon theme has been updated.

Xubuntu is using the Droid font by default, since it is a lightweight, good visibility font.

The newly released Xfce 4.8 is included. The menus in Xfce 4.8 are now editable with any menu editor that meets the freedesktop.org standards. The suggested editor is alacarte.

Edubuntu

You can test Edubuntu 11.04 directly from your web browser by going at http://www.edubuntu.org/weblive (regular Ubuntu 11.04 is also available).

WebLive is also directly integrated in the Ubuntu Software Center letting you test the most popular apps without installing them on your machine. Just click the "Test drive" button.

The installer now has an additional step allowing users to fine-tune which applications should be installed on the final system.

Edubuntu now ships with Arkose, which provides application sandboxing for downloaded apps.

New software packages in Edubuntu include Pencil, Geogebra, Calibre, LibreCAD, Freemind and Stellarium.

Theming improvements include a new wallpaper, a LDM theme when installing LTSP from the Edubuntu installer. The text-mode boot mode now displays "Edubuntu" instead of "Ubuntu". Our ongoing menu refinements include new icons where they were missing, and more consistent case use in menu entries.

Edubuntu 11.04 ships with the classical Gnome desktop by default but Unity is available as an option in the installer.

Ubuntu Studio

The task selections during installation have been updated. The audio tasks have been parsed into two groups: generation and recording.

Currently, Ubuntu Studio is shipping the -generic kernel. We are working with the Ubuntu Kernel Team to get a -low latency kernel into the archives. An interim -lowlatency kernel is available in Allesio Bogani's PPA.

network-manager has replaced gnome-network-admin.

The packages shipped in Ubuntu Studio are now more focused to support identified tasks and their derived work flows.

Ubuntu Studio does not currently use Unity. As the user logs in it will default to Gnome Classic Desktop (i.e. Gnome2).

Mythbuntu

The Mythbuntu-bare (Backup and Restore for the database and configuration files) Mythbuntu Control Center plugin now has the ability to schedule backups on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

Android and iOS devices can now be used as remote controls.

MythTV 0.24 is now integrated into the builds.

Overview

Preparing your computer for Ubuntu is now much simpler, with a wider range of disk setup options. Each of these are detailed at length to provide you with a clear understanding of the actions that will take place with your selection.

You can now reinstall or upgrade an existing copy of Ubuntu with the Desktop CD installer, provided that your computer is connected to the Internet.

System Requirements

The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 11.04 is 384 MB of memory for Ubuntu Desktop. Note that some of your system's memory may be unavailable due to being used by the graphics card. If your computer has only the minimum amount of memory, the installation process will take longer than normal; however, it will complete successfully, and the system will perform adequately once installed.

The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu Server 11.04 is 128 MB of memory.

Systems with less memory may be able to select "Install Ubuntu" from the boot menu to run just the installer, rather than the whole desktop, or may be able to use the alternate install CD.

Upgrading

From Ubuntu 10.10

To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on a desktop system, press Alt+F2, type in "update-manager" (without the quotes), and press Enter. Update Manager will open up and display the message, "New distribution release '11.04' is available." Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.

To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 on a server system, install the package update-manager-core if it is not already installed. Then execute the command sudo do-release-upgrade, and follow the on-screen instructions. Note that the server upgrade is now more robust, and thus will utilize GNU screen and automatically re-attach in case unexpected problems arise, e.g. dropped connection problems.

The same instructions apply to all other editions of Ubuntu (such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, etc.)

Problemi noti

Boot, installazione e post-installazione

• When installing the amd64+mac version, please do not use LVM. Also avoid using multiple linux instances at this time. (745960)

• Keyboard preseeding that worked in previous versions of Ubuntu no longer works. Instead of console-setup/layoutcode, console-setup/variantcode, console-setup/modelcode, and console-setup/optionscode, you need to preseed keyboard-configuration/layoutcode, keyboard-configuration/variantcode, keyboard-configuration/modelcode, and keyboard-configuration/optionscode respectively. (747854)

• Selecting "Configure encrypted volumes" in the alternate/server installer initialises encrypted volumes from scratch, and will destroy any encrypted data that was previously present. There is no way to reuse an existing encrypted volume at installation time at the moment, although we do consider this a bug that will be fixed in a future release. (420080)

• Some users booting machines from the network using PXE, and using the LOCALBOOT facility in Syslinux to hand off to a local hard disk, found that there was no argument that would successfully cause a local boot. Syslinux provides a chain.c32 COM32 image which is less reliant on PXE BIOS implementation details. (625383)

• Even if no Internet access is available during installation, the desktop CD installer offers checkboxes to install third-party software and software updates. These options may not work properly without Internet access. (651932)

• The manual mount point entry box in the desktop installer's partitioner does not accept keyboard input. The drop-down still works, so various standard mount points may be selected, and copying and pasting within the entry box also works. This was noticed too late to be corrected for 11.04. In the meantime, you can mount partitions manually later, use copy-and-paste, or use the alternate install CD. (769043)

btrfs

Il filesystem btrfs è considerato sperimentale in questo rilascio. Questo può generalmente essere installato e usato, ma con diversi problemi. Si dovrebbe usare solo se si ha dimestichezza con i problemi, aiutandoci a risolverli.

• Altre installazioni di Ubuntu su btrfs non verranno rilevate o aggiunte al menù di boot. (764893)

Avanzamento da Ubuntu 10.10

• In alcuni casi (particolarmente se sono usati paremetri del kernel differenti da quelli predefiniti) l'avanzamento da Ubuntu 10.10 può chiedere di risolvere conflitti nel file di configurazione /etc/default/grub anche quando non ha avuto modifiche manuali. Avviare un "three-way merge" normalmente dovrebbe essere sufficiente se si presenta la richiesta, sebbene successivamente bisognerebbe controllare il file /etc/default/grub per assicurarsi che sia corretto. • Se si ha manualmente installato un PAE kernel (Per esempio per usare più di 4GB di RAM) e si ha anche installato i driver proprietari NVidia, bisogna installare manualmente il pacchetto "linux-headers-generic-pae" dopo che l'avanzamento è stato completato ma prima del riavvio. In caso contrario ne risulterà un blocco del sistema all'avvio. Se si è scordati di installare questo pacchetto prima del riavvio, selezionare l'opzione "recovery" dal menù d'avvio per avere la possibilità di installare il pacchetto usando "apt-get install linux-headers-generic-pae". Grafica e display

• Il driver video -nouveau ha avuto un cambiamento ABI ma mancava un incremento del numero di versione. Seguendo Debian, lo stiamo distribuendo come 'libdrm-nouveau1a'. Essere consapevoli che questo può causare difficoltà di avanzamento/retrocessione da PPA che includono i pacchetti libdrm.

Desktop

• Nautilus rimane aperto quando il plugin ubuntu one viene installato. (674876)

• Quando si avvia una sessione live su un sistema senza supporto 3D, GNOME panel non viene visualizzato. Come rimedio si può premere Alt+F2 e lanciare gnome-panel --replace. Sui sistemi installati si dovrebbe scegliere la sessione "Ubuntu Classic (No effetti)" nella schermata di login. (711378)

• Quando si passa da una finestra ad un'altra, Orca non dice il titolo della finestra in primo piano. (724093)

• Nella sessione classica gnome-panel a volte fallisce il caricamento degli applets. (716714)

• Sulle immagini ARM, la versione di Unity 2D va in crash in varie occasioni. (739386)

• Unity può non funzionare correttamente se le impostazioni DRI sono presenti in ~/.drirc (745996)

• Unity non supporta ancora a pieno il focus-follows-mouse/sloppy-focus/point-to-click. Abilitare questa funzione può causare un comportamento inaspettato. (674138)

• La funzione di ricerca in Unity non supporta gli input ibus (66377) o le dead keys (746761); non sono supportati neanche i risultati della ricerca nelle lingue Cinese, Giapponese e Coreano (745243) - Queste limitazioni verranno affrontate in un imminente aggiornamento (3.8.14) e verranno proposte come SRU.

• Libreoffice non ha i bottoni minimizza/massimalizza/chiudi. (728927) Un SRU dovrebbe risolvere questo problema brevemente

• Le icone di terze parti non vengono inserite all'avvio. (758839) - Una soluzione è riavviare Unity con unity --replace mentre una correzione è stata proposta in un SRU

Trackpads, touchscreens, mouse, e tastiere

• I driver -synaptics hanno ricevuto un nuovo meccanismo d'accelerazione. Gli utenti Trackpad possono notare un significante decremento (o incremento) nell'accelerazione come risultato. Stiamo investigando sulle opzioni di configurazione per questo nuovo comportamento.

• The -evtouch driver is not available anymore due to a lack of upstream support. Users are encouraged to switch to the default -evdev driver. Please file a bug report against the -evdev driver for any broken or missing functionality.

Linux kernel

• Toshiba NB305 si blocca per 5 minuti dopo la sospensione. Soluzione: specificare "nohz=off highres=off" come parametri del kernel all'avvio. (508516)

• I modelli ThinkPad BIOS/EC potrebbero avere un firmware antiquato. (745363)

• Su alcuni hardware, abilitare il power saving per le connessioni SATA può causare errori sul disco e corruzione dei dati. (539467)

• Su Mac/amd64 lo schermo fisisco principale (display iMac) è rilevato dai driver radeon del'OS come output eDP-0, nome 'Color LCD', ed è connesso ma non si accende. (542660)

• X potrebbe lampeggiare e in dmesg risulterà: "[drm:drm_edid_block_valid] *ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid". Ad intermittenza lo schermo può diventare nero dopo un lampeggiamento. Si può rimediare attraverso il comando 'sudo get-edid'. (712075)

• Sui server 32bit t1.micro, l'instanza si blocca quando si installa Sun Java. (634487)

• Schermata di errore come "[drm:radeon_ttm_backend_bind] *ERROR* failed to bind 1772 pages" può essere mostrata durante un riavvio da LiveCD. (656486)

• Samsung N150 rimane bloccato dopo la sospensione. Soluzione: specificare "intel_idle.mac_cstate=3" come parametro del kernel all'avvio. (640100)

Ubuntu Software Center

Ubuntu Server

• Cryptsetup passphrase prompt during boot: every character typed repeats the prompt. (566818)

Ubuntu ARM

While we set the required mpurate commandline parameter on our images, the values for the different OMAP3 CPUs are not always correct, to work around this you can edit the cmdline in /boot/boot.script and call "sudo flash-kernel", the change will take effect on next reboot (771537)

• Dopo la creazione di un nuovo utente in Kubuntu, gli verrà chiesto di cambiare la propria password quando effettuerà l'accesso per la prima volta. C'è un problema il quale impedisce di digitare la password. Per risolvere questo problema bisogna riavviare l'X server prima dell'accesso del nuovo utente. Dopo il logout, cliccare su bottone rosso di logout sulla schermata del KDM e cliccare su "Riavvia X Server". Tornati alla schermata di accesso KDM, il nuovo utente può fare l'accesso normalmente. Xubuntu

  • In Xubuntu, update-manager -d non permette di aggiornare dalla 10.10; il comando sudo do-release-upgrade -d è una soluzione (756763)

  • L'icona del network-manager viene a mancare dall'area degli indicatori dopo l'aggiornamento a Xubuntu 11.04 (759608)

Edubuntu

• Non vi è un'immagine di Edubuntu specifica per AMD64+mac. Gli utenti con hardware Apple dovrebbero usare la versione 32 bit di Edubuntu.

• Un bug nell'installazione richiede 14.1GB per installare Edubuntu invece di 6-7GB. (771401)

• Quando si usa Edubuntu 11.04 con LTSP, Unity è sempre la sessione di default, anche se non è stato selezionato durante l'installazione. (770323)

• I passaggi dell'installazione personalizzata di Edubuntu (Selezione Unity/LTSP e selezione dei pacchetti) non sono tradotti. (771268)
