Mission

The Ubuntu RTL Team's mission is to improve the support of right-to-left languages like Arabic, Farsi and Hebrew in Ubuntu.

RTL

RTL stands for right to left. Since RTL is a not the original direction of text in computing it has it's own development challenges. For this reason we have teamed up. The 'rtl' bug tag is used to mark any bug that has to do with RTL localization (making the interface RTL).

There is a table with information about the RTL languages.

"Down to Earth"

We report, triage and fix bugs which affect users of RTL languages in Ubuntu.

We try to contribute our changes upstream as much as possible. Please try to stick to that code (literally) Smile :) .

Goals

  1. Getting RTL support in Unity

  2. A mentor who has experience with coding for RTL.

Completed

  1. Getting the rtl tag accepted as one of the standard Ubuntu bug tags. ✓

  2. Support from the relevant LoCo teams; Ubuntu Arabic, Ubuntu Iranian Team and Ubuntu Israel Team. Nothing official - their support is assumed and expected.
