RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4

Revision 164 as of 2009-05-24 12:02:18

Clear message

The problem

experience a serious performance degration after upgrading from intrepid to jaunty. The reasons for that are already explained on that page. This page explains how to revert the driver to the version in intrepid.

Installing the package

Add the following lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

 deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/siretart/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
 deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/siretart/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

Import the appropriate GPG key:

 sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com 0xce90d8983e731f79

See https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA#Adding%20a%20PPA%20to%20your%20Ubuntu%20repositories for additional information how to add GPG keys to your system.

Install the driver:

 $ sudo apt-get update
 $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4

Now you should be set. Restart X by running "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" in a terminal and see if the graphics performance from intrepid is restored.

Do I need to change my xorg.conf file? ==> May not work. Situation not improved without xorg.conf change??

Rolling back

If the driver does not work for you, or is not better, you should rollback to the original Ubuntu one. Remove the two lines from /etc/apt/sources.list again, and install the original one again:

 $ sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-intel

If X.org does not start at all, you should change to a text terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2, logging in, and use "sudo nano" to edit /etc/apt/sources.list. After installing xserver-xorg-video-intel, restart the computer with "sudo reboot".

Results

If you have tested the package, please report your findings (broken|same|better) and also your PCI ID:

  lspci -nn | grep VGA

better performance

Max

switching users with the fast-switch applet now doesn't permanently lock up the computer. Flash video still seems a bit jittery though (occasionally slows down, then speeds up), but otherwise, back to Intrepid level

[8086:2572] (rev 02)

performance restored

Li Tai Fang

Graphic performance returned to Intrepid level

[8086:27a2] (rev 03)

Performance decreased

Patrick Vogeli

With drivers 2.6 I get about 800fps in glxgears, with 2.4 about 350. I get ~15fps in extremetuxracer with 2.6

[8086:3582] (rev 02)

Small improvement

Webabun

Lower CPU usage, still not running smoothly as with 8.10

[8086:2772] (rev 02)

performance improved

Ruben Kwast

On the surface the same performance as in 8.10. But after serious testing: Games are still not running smooth and same goes for full screen flash videos in FF3. <- solved by Option "AccelMethod" "xaa" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Still not 8.10 performance though...

compiz/metacity performance is the same as Hardy (I also had issues with Intrepid).

[8086:2572] (rev 02)

performance restored

Chad Rodrigue

DRI: Check. Compiz (or Metacity Composting): Check. Videos playable on youtube and totem: Check. Tearing and corruption: gone. Still a little slow on full-screen refreshes (min/maximizing windows), but this driver is a godsend for this chipset, which is awfully laggy and has no DRI in Jaunty's default 2.6 driver.

[8086:2572] (rev 02)

performance improved

Everything running smoothly now

[8086:2572] (rev 02)

restored-ish

Zorael

Roughly the same as I had in Intrepid, ~6-7x what I have with 2.7 drivers from git. A+, would download again.

[8086:2592] (rev 03)

significant improvement

alt

Compiz works much better, but still have lots of odd lines everywhere in Blender

[8086:2592] (rev 03)

No improvement

prunus dulcis

No change. Still can not enable Compiz. Blender interface still not usable (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/blender/+bug/360415). Ubuntu 9.04, kernel: 2.6.28-11.

[8086:2592] (rev 03)

[8086:2592] (rev 03)

Slightly better

[8086:27a2] (rev 03)

No improvement

Radomirs Cirskis

No noticeable improvements. Still cannot access drivers. Compiz doesn't work. Playback in full screen is hopeless. Ubuntu 9.04, kernel: 2.6.28-11.

[8086:27a2] (rev 03)

No Improvement

Matt0001

Full-screen Flash video (Hulu) extremely choppy.

the same as "NB", glxgears shows "Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic." Performance is a little worse than it used to be.

[8086:27a2] (rev 03)

No improvement

NB

Still poor performance: glxgears shows "Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.". The performance is better than default Jaunty settings and it's comparable to Jaunty+UXA or Intrepid+EXA, that is 3-4 times slower than Hardy or Intrepid+XAA. Compiz works (default Jaunty lags, Jaunty+UXA works well on Compiz). Extreme Tux Racer displays 0.5 to 1.8 FPS, compared to 5-7 In Jaunty+EXA+MigrationHeuristic "greedy" and to 9 to 24 of Jaunty+UXA. 2D redraw lag is noticeable, maybe worse than Jaunty+UXA. Ubuntu 9.04, kernel: 2.6.28-11.

performance restored

souternlights

Everything works great now, not slow any more

[8086:2982] (rev 03)

compiz/metacity performance is back on par with Hardy (I didn't test Intrepid).

[8086:2a02] (rev 03)

slightly worse

Laurent

With the normal Jaunty driver, at least with no open Windows, the Compiz effects were fluid. Now, I experiment lack of performances even with no open windows. Apart of that, no change (even after reboot).

[8086:2a02] (rev 03)

performance worse

Joshua Kite

"Desktop effects could not be enabled" (Compiz). Full screen video performance okay for about half a second, then screen dims and full screen videos are jerky. Was fine with Intrepid

[8086:2a02] (rev 03)

preformance improved

Jo-Erlend Schinstad

Metacity performance is greatly enhanced. Compiz still won't run because the device is blacklisted (skip_checks doesn't help): http://wiki.compiz-fusion.org/Hardware/Blacklist

[8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

performance worse

AlwinGarside

Benchmarking shows a 50% performance decrease when switching to the 2.4 driver. I recommend sticking to the new driver and disabling Compiz to prevent freezes (should be disabled in the latest Compiz updates).

[8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

performance worse

mackdieselx27

PPRacer was about 18-20 FPS with the 2.6 driver + greedy migration and 4-6 FPS with 2.4. Everything else was choppy all around so I reverted back to 2.6. Xorg continues to hog 30% of the CPU.

[8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

performance worse

TomChiverton

Xorg uses 30% CPU, like the 2.6 driver does when used with no UXA option. Under 8.10 all was fine.

[8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

[8086:2a42] (rev 07)

performance improved

Lure

much better performance than 2.6 driver with EXA+greedy or UXA, only problem is that it gets physical size of my 12.1" panel wrong (have to use xrandr --fbmm to fix it manually)

[8086:2a42] (rev 07)

Was fine with Intrepid. Could only enable 3D Desktop effects by adding SKIP_CHECKS=yes (normal driver also same). Effects were flickering when moving windows. "Option AccelMethod uxa" did not change performance (normal driver is much better with this option - but causes X hangs sometimes).

Performance of Kubuntu + KDE Effects feels *almost* as good as in 8.10, however when I tried to play my newly installed Penumbra Black Plague, the game performance was completely unacceptable. Went back to xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.6.3-0ubuntu9 and the game performance was restored. Well, now I have to keep switching back and forth between 2.4.1 (when I need to work) and 2.6.3 (when I need to play) until this bug is completely solved...

[8086:2a02] (rev 03)

Disaster

ReedMace

No graphics at all. Was fine under Intrepid (including wobbly windows!). X-server log reported "(EE) intel(0): Output LVDS enabled but has no modes; (EE) intel(0): No valid modes; (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." Had to rollback to Jaunty driver using nano (thanks for the instructions) so still have original problem (an inch of blank screen either side of display area)

[8086:29a2] (rev 02)

No Improvement

imwithid

Flash video choppy in full screen mode. Screen resolution limited to 1360x768. If you have an 82G965 Integrated Graphics Controller and do not experience problems with the default driver installation for Jaunty, I would not downgrade.

[8086:27a2] (rev 03)

Broken

System hangs

Adolfo R. Brandes

Performance improves, but the machine hangs roughly once every two hours (with Compiz and Cube enabled)

[8086:29c2] (rev 02)

Slightly worse

nachokb

No improvement (Intrepid was far better); stutters after some time (minutes or hours); full-screen Flash still unwatchable (was OK in Intrepid); glxgears less than half than 2.6 (both window and full screen; with compiz enabled it stutters); HD playback a little worse (drops a few frames)

[8086:2e12] (rev 03)

Unable to verify

Anthony Durity

When I reverted to the 2.4 driver I found myself facing the situation where my Dell 19" monitor could not display a thing because of incorrect timing settings. This was the case with this machine prior to Jaunty and also occured to me with another Dell box and a 22" monitor and a different Intel card whose PCI ID I do not know so either I'm very unlucky or there's something going on with Dell's digital flat panels and Intel's 2.4 driver. Normally multiple reboots would mysteriously get the two to talk to each other but it was maybe 1 time in 5. Completely random. The latest driver fixed this for me (I was overjoyed) but then I started getting window border artifacts so I thought maybe I'd revert and try my luck. I'll stick with a driver that allows me to boot 100% of the time I reckon.

[8086:27a2] (rev 03)

Performance Improved

Michael Spencer

Improved from ~205 fps to ~420 fps - still below the ~550 fps I had on Intrepid, but a significant improvement. Oddly enough, however, full-screen flash video seems to have a lower performance than with Jaunty default (2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9)

[8086:2a02] (rev 03)

Performance restored

phitron

I don't use any 3D/Compiz stuff. 2D performance is much better with driver 2.4 now: I can drag windows around without artefacts, firefox scrolls faster, firefox tabbar scrolls way faster. Thanks! But: In comparison to jaunty's intel driver, fps from glxgears (I know it's not a benchmark) drop to about half the amount - anyway that's not relevant for me.

[8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

Fixes freezes

GustavoNarea

Without this, my system used to freeze several times a day as described in Bug #375358. However, now I can't play 3D games like OpenArena (the screen is very small in the beginning and then it turns black) and KDE transparency effects stopped working. Does not improve performance either.

[8086:2a02] (rev 0c)

Performance restored

AndreSpiegel

Performance for regular work was very bad with the 2.6 driver, especially minimizing and restoring windows, and most notably evolution. With the 2.4 driver, the performance is restored close to what it was in Intrepid.
