Ubuntu releases are supported for 18 months. Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases are supported for 3 years on the desktop, and 5 years on the server.

Ubuntu releases every six months, one month after each Gnome release (see TimeBasedReleases)

Variants of Ubuntu

  • ["Kubuntu"] (Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome)
  • ["Edubuntu"] (Ubuntu focused on education)
  • ["Xubuntu"] (Ubuntu with XFCE instead of Gnome)

And perhaps in the future:

  • GrumpyGroundhog (an Ubuntu-derived distribution containing a "crack-of-the-day" set of packages)
