Contributions

Summary

My primary contributions have been to the Kubuntu Ubiquity installer frontend and related work. I also ported OpenOffice to Qt4/KDE4 and continue to support those efforts.

Detail

I began working on Ubuntu in early 2009. Having just come across some spare time, I took a look at the TODO list for Kubuntu and saw a few low hanging fruit for the installer frontend. I basically just hopped onto the #kubuntu channel and got redirected to #ubuntu-installer and went from there. Everyone was eager to help and I picked up python quick enough to get a number of the items finished for the release.

After the Jaunty release I was told about OpenOffice not yet being ported to KDE4 (we wanted to get rid of KDE3 dependencies) so I decided to undertake that effort for Karmic. That work was in c++ and challenged me in other ways. The end result was the ability to use the fancy oxygen style in OpenOffice Smile :)

For Karmic I also worked closely with the KDE Oxygen artists to overhaul the look of the Kubuntu Installer. After my work in Jaunty, I wanted to make the installer have a little more "style" to it and blend with the overall KDE oxygen/air theme better. This resulted in a complete graphical overhaul and was done for Karmic.

Future Plans

Besides continuing to work on the Kubuntu aspects of the installer and fixing some of the OpenOffice KDE4 integration issues that pop up from time to time, I hope to grow support for a new project and idea I proposed at UDS Lucid. The idea was to create a live assistant for Ubuntu. It would be an easy way for new users to get their support and assistance in a more timely manner. I wrote more about it on my initial blog post http://www.shtylman.com/archives/154 and since then have a sample prototype working with some of the critical functionality in place.
