26-Sep-2011 - Fixing the Clipboard for VNC Servers

I use TightVNC for my remote desktop VNC server. However, it requires some extra setup to get the clipboard to work properly between the VNC client software and the VNC server software for most programs. This is also true for other VNC servers besides TightVNC. The link below explains why:

http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2003-February/037299.html

To get around this problem, I use the program autocutsel:

http://www.nongnu.org/autocutsel

First, I installed the autocutsel package:

sudo apt-get install autocutsel

Then put the following line in my ~/.vnc/xstartup file just before the line that runs my desktop:

autocutsel&

Here is my resultant complete ~/.vnc/xstartup configuration file:

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
#x-terminal-emulator -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
#x-window-manager &
# Fix to make GNOME work
export XKL_XMODMAP_DISABLE=1
autocutsel&
/etc/X11/Xsession

Kill and start the VNC server again, or reboot if you auto load it on boot, and the clipboard will now work!
