Objective

This page has for goal to define a server survey that we would ask our community to answer on a regular basis.

Introduction

In an effort to better understand, support and further the Ubuntu Server Edition we would like to ask you to take this short poll.

The information provided will help us determine where we can improve support, where to add additional resources and to generate a better understanding of the community which we work within.

Please note that this survey is being conducted by the Ubuntu Server Team in conjunction with the Canonical Server Product Management Team. Information about the Server Team is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/

Tool

Questions

The questions have now been put in LimeSurvey. Please find an export of the questions in html format:

Note: LimeSurvey survey is now configured to randomize the field order all non numerical question. This will not show in the export, though.

Please write your comments in the discussion section below or discuss them in the Server ML or on #ubuntu-server.

Change Requests

* Please report change requests on [https://bugs.launchpad.net/server-survey/ launchpad]. Doing so will make it easier for us to address specific changes or to manage conversations regarding topics better if they are not on the ML or IRC.

Discussion

Global Comments

  • Survey "feels" long, that is, it feels like it takes forever to get to the end.
  • The capitalization of the word "linux" is inconsistent.
  • There seems to be a regular "No answer" option, this is not really useful for getting stats. I would advocate removing that option where it occurs throughout the survey.
  • The sub-text: "Check any that apply" should probably be "Check all that apply"
  • Many questions start with an asterisk. Remove the asterisk from all the questions.
  • Setting the order of answers to random is a very bad idea because it makes the list unreadable and un-scannable, that is, a reader cannot 'scan' the list looking for their answer.
  • The category title "Linux Servers" doesn't really make sense. It changes at some point to "Ubuntu Servers" and then "General Questions", perhaps show a greater variety, and use longer phrases.

Specific Questions

  • Which version(s) of Linux do you use on your server(s)?

    • Change the order of the OS versions, either alphabetically, or Ubuntu, Debian on top.

      - pending, this has been previously discussed and will be revisited - Faulkes

  • Which features are most important to you on your Linux servers?

    • The options should probably be:
      • (-2) Not at all important
      • (-1) Slightly important
      • ( 0) Moderately important
      • (+1) Very Important
      • (+2) Extremely important

        - Negative numbers give negative conotation, 1-5 is a standard survey format - Faulkes

  • Which type of hardware do you run Linux servers on?

    • This set of choices should probably be separated into two, CPU and BRAND because there is too much scope for exception and the choice list is too long.

-pending - this has previously been discussed, because it is a very broad category it would extend the length of the survey and likely cause takers to abandon it - Faulkes

  • Was your problem resolved by the community support?

    • Remove the extra trailing line after the question title.
      • - there does not appear to be a trailing line after the question - Faulkes

  • Which features required you to install the graphical interface on your Ubuntu server?

    • This is a "teaser" question, it allows you to get a sense of the kinds of answers for the next poll. Give people an idea of how they might go about answering it. For example:
      • If you installed the GUI to facilitate non-skilled access, describe the kinds of access that it is used for.
    • The text entry block is too small.
  • If you use your Ubuntu servers as a host for virtualization, which product(s)/technology(ies) do you use?

    • Change "VMWare" to "VMware".

      - fixed - Faulkes

  • If your network contains both Ubuntu servers and other servers, how would you rate their coexistence? (5 is better)

    • Change the ranking from 1 to 5 to -2 to +2
  • If your network contains one or more clients, how would you rate its integration with Ubuntu Server per operating system? (5 is better)

    • Change the ranking from 1 to 5 to -2 to +2
  • Has your organization deployed a global directory service? if so, which do you use?

    • Delete " if so, which do you use?"

      - fixed, Faulkes

    • Change "No answer" to "Don't use a global directory service."
    • If I use Samba as my directory service, how would I answer?

      - Samba is not a directory service, OpenLDAP is, no change required - Faulkes

  • Please etimate hom many of the following server OS are running in your organization.

    • This question should be at the start with the other scaling questions.
    • Delete "Please"
    • Change "etimate" to "Estimate"
    • Change "hom" to "how"

      - fixed in my branch for typo's not other content - Faulkes

  • Does your organization run the following applications on its servers?

    • This question should be with the services we run questions.
  • Please tell us which types of workloads you consider mission critical.

    • Delete "Please tell us "

      - fixed, Faulkes

    • Change "which" to "Which"

      - fixed, Faulkes

    • This question should be near the mission critical questions.
  • Which region of the world do you live in?

    • This needs to be a radio button list of answers.
    • What answer is Israel/Egypt/etc?
