An update from the Forums Council for December 2015

Forum Structure Revamped

Some areas have been repurposed to better fit current questions.

The Multimedia area is now dedicated to multimedia software questions. We also have dedicated sub-forums for Mythbuntu and Ubuntu Studio. All video and sound card, and other hardware inquiries, should go to the Hardware section.

Unanswered Posts Search

Unanswered Posts can now be searched from categories (the structure above individual forums), which allows for ex to search for all unanswered posts from all support forums at once.

Staff Team

For the time being, we have decided to remain with 5 Admins in the Forums Council, the workload being nicely shared among us. To note, 3 Super Moderators help with some aspects of the Forums administration.

PaulW2U and PartisanEntity have stepped down from their moderator position. Thanks for all the work you both have done on the forums !

Moderator Team Meetings

The second Moderator meeting was held on September 20th. These meetings are aimed at gathering the whole UF Staff even though we talk on a daily basis in the Staff (restricted) forums. Real time talking are always good for a team and help everyone to be on the same page regarding forums moderation and reinforce the team feeling.

Forums Slowdowns and Double Posting

The Ubuntu Forums have been quite slow for some time now, leading to pages that could not be accessed and double postings in threads. Canonical Sysadmins have changed two ram modules on the servers. Forums usability has been drastically improved. Many thanks to Junien

* Ubuntu hour - lectures for beginners were held in Belgrade haklab, every Tuesday.

* On Friday, 01st Ubuntu support party for HIV positive persons were held in Belgrade haklab. Gathering and sharing knowledge and talk about safety at all levels in life.

* On Friday, 22nd Be Ubuntu party was held in Belgrade haklab.

* On Saturday 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th December Administration team meeting was held.

* On Tuesday 31st Ubuntu New Year Eve. Happy holidays.

* 02 December - Westside Ubuntu Hour hosted by programmer317

* 03 December - Tempe Ubuntu Hour hosted by pavlos

• 8 attendees (3 new people)
• Discussed RAID configurations using zfs
• Gave 15 install DVDs to Nassir to pass on to his class
• Fixed Kubuntu video issue using nomodeset boot parameter

• Banana Pi donated to InstallFest

• Reviewed magnetic chargers for phones (Samsung, LG)

* 05 December - Linux Installfest co-sponsored by AZLOCO and PLUG

• 25 attendees (5 new people)
• 6 distro installs on servers and laptops
• Troubleshot Zentyal server (stephen), ASUS wifi router (nicholas)
• Installed printer driver on laptop (walter)
• Black-hat team attempted to hack our Zentyal server – They failed!
• Several penguins took flight and 5 new people attended event

• Discussed how to install and uninstall a desktop environment

* 17 December - Tempe Ubuntu Hour hosted by Todd Cole

• 8 attendees (1 new person)
• Discussed programming languages and upcoming events (installfest, Scale, and Ubucon information as well as providing assisting at the Ubucon booth and initial travel plans)
• Discussed a possible group cat 6 home wiring project.

* 19 December - Linux Installfest co-sponsored by AZLOCO and PLUG

• 14 attendees
• 5 installs (3 Linux and 2 Windows 7)
• Repaired server issues on installfest server (installfest #5) due to a full boot partition.
• During the week Mark built a PXE multi-system server but is still needing Samba DHCP and gateway and second Nick card.
• Helped to fix a wifi issue and showed a new user how to update two computers
• Tested some voice to text software but no good software was found.
• Fixed one file share between Mac and Linux and worked on access point connection issue.
