But the so small plastic pen that comes with PocketPC is to me an aberration (except when used to write text): it is a tool to use the PDA which is an other tool. Have you ever seen an electrician using a clamp to use a screwdriver ?

Developing/Testing usable widgets for PocketPC

I like to use PDA applications with my finger/thumb. Actually, I lost the plastic pen that comes with.

For my master thesis, I'm conducting usability testing on widgets to improve data input with your fingers. I believe PDA can improve productivity in many different situations, mainly by

  • bringing knowledge with you (text&pictures, text-to-speech, task wizard, diagnostic wizard, video/animations, web search, intranet search, ...)

  • communicating (email, phone, VoIP, Instant Messenger, centralized task lists/schedules, centralized contact list)
  • reducing paper work
  • avoiding end-of-the-day data input sessions on desktop computers
