About me

I'm an UNIX administrator working part time for the Computing Centre of Helsinki University of Technology in Finland. Current work involves administering 200+ Linux (Debian Sarge atm) workstations and some Tru64-UNIX servers. When not working, I'm trying to finish my master's degree (major: semiconductors and materials of electronics).

I've been using Linux since 1998; first briefly SuSE, then Debian unstable until in November 2004 I had to reinstall my laptop and decided to try Ubuntu because of the Debian heritage. Now my home computer runs Dapper, and some of my friends have installed Ubuntu as well and are very pleased. I'm also trying to convince my boss that U. is better for us than any "Enterprice" (pun intended) distro that starts with a letter "R" Smile :)

Skills

  • General UNIX-administration, mostly Linux and Tru64 UNIX (+Trucluster)
  • shell & some perl, other languages now read-only

  • learning to maintain deb-packages, currently having some scaling problems (i.e. how to use a SCM properly)

What I'm interested in

  • GNOME, in general
  • NFSv4 support. Essential for installations behind insecure networks
  • making sure that Ubuntu behaves well in a campus network with hundreds of clients
  • improving the framework for automatic installations
  • improving various tools aimed at system administrators
  • VDR: my home machine is now a DVB/PVR server Smile :) (since 2006-2-10)

Contributions so far

Todo

  • help making preseedable LVM/MD-support for debian-installer
  • possibly integrate in-house applications/scripts with Ubuntu
  • make PAM/LDAP/krb5 integration better
  • more and better VDR-related packages [http://www.e-tobi.net/blog/pages/vdr-repository/], together with Debian
