About Me

I maintain the Cisco network at [http://weber.edu Weber State University]. As part of my job, I work with many open source network management applications including [http://nedi.sf.net NeDi], [http://www.cacti.net/ Cacti], [http://snort.org Snort], [http://secureideas.sourceforge.net/ Base], [http://ntop.org Ntop], [http://www.splintered.net/sw/flow-tools/docs/flow-tools.html Flow-tools], and [http://nfsen.sf.net NFsen].

My interest in Ubuntu

I have been with Ubuntu since the beginning. I was looking into UserLinux at the time (fall 2004), when I heard about a secret Debian-based distribution that was being created (http://no-name-yet.com) by the Warty Warthogs. I fell in love with Ubuntu at first sight of the Ubuntu 4.10 Preview Release. I was infatuated with how Ubuntu took the best parts of Debian (apt, non-commercial) and improved on all the things that Debian lacked (regular releases, simple install). It was a dream come true!

Presented Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog) to the Ogden Area Linux User Group (OALUG) in 2004

  • Almost all members have since converted to Ubuntu

Included Ubuntu disks with my Christmas cards that year (2004) Thanks Canonical for ShipIt!

  • A friend used his Christmas CD to install Ubuntu after his Windows crashed due to viruses

Used Ubuntu at work as a network management server

  • A few co-workers have since converted to Ubuntu

Installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on my brother/sister-in-law's PC

  • His Windows installation was also unusable due to viruses

Installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS on a virtual machine for my father

  • He doesn't want to have to upgrade to Vista, so he is learning Ubuntu

(Status : Submitting Application) I advocate OSS and Ubuntu Linux in the state of Utah. I would love to see OSS more widely used in homes, schools, businesses and government offices. Below are our ["UtahTeam"] proposed steps:

Step 1

As a Team we are working on recruiting more local users. This is done through regular CD distribution in Universities and local hardware/service shops. A stronger local support base will be critical to growing & supporting Ubuntu in the state of Utah.

Step 2

We are planning on presenting the state offices with information on migrating to OSS. Drafts and letters to be made available as they are produced.

We also plan on distributing Edubuntu/Ubuntu within local school districts.

Step 3

Support! We have setup a website, IRC channel and mailing list to support continued growth in the area. This is the key step. Without the support of a strong and widespread team base these goals will not be possible.
