What is Ubuntu Kylin?

The objective of the Ubuntu Kylin project is to create a variant of Ubuntu that is more suitable for Chinese users. We are committed to provide you with a delicate, thoughtful and fully customized Chinese user experience out-of-the-box. For instance, by providing a desktop user interface localized in Chinese and installing common software that Chinese users commonly use by default. Ubuntu Kylin has been a formal member of the Ubuntu family since Ubuntu Kylin 13.04. Now, we are happy to announce the release of Ubuntu Kylin 14.04 LTS.

Features in Ubuntu Kylin 14.04 LTS Release

In this final release, the Linux kernel is upgraded to 3.13 and Unity is upgraded to 7.2.

Kernel

This final release includes the 3.13.0-19.39 Ubuntu Linux kernel which was based on the v3.13.6 upstream Linux kernel.

  • Kingsoft Kuaipan, a Linux cloud storage client jointly developed by Ubuntu Kylin Team and the Kingsoft Cloud Corp.. It provides file synchronization, backup, and sharing capabilities. You can manage your files across all OS now!

  • WPS Office, domestic text processing tools, compatible with Microsoft Office file formats, powerful typesetting features and extensive online resources.

Coming Soon

  • Ubuntu Kylin Software Center, designed with GUI much easy for Chinese. It supports both Ubuntu and Ubuntu Kylin archives. You can enjoy popular Chinese applications co-developed by Ubuntu Kylin team!

  • Sogou Input Method, co-developed by Ubuntu Kylin team and Sogou Corp.. It is based on Fcitx framework and supports the same user experience with Windows, Mac version. We will release the first formal version in Apr 2014.

Known Problems

  • The default input method is IBus while we choose fcitx as default (1297831)

  • The backend doesn't run normally in youker-assistant (1298428)

  • Some machines have problem after updgraded from 13.10 to 14.04，cannot login system (1298237)，Input-keyboard can not input Chinese (1298367)

  • Default Chinese font changed after completing language support installation (1227034)

  • The latest wallpaper not integrated (1298155)

System Requirements

A Pentium II or Celeron system with 512 MB of RAM is probably a bottom-line configuration that may yield slow yet usable system with a standard Ubuntu Kylin desktop.

14.04 ISO require your CPU to have Physical Address Extensions, or PAE. "PAE is provided by Intel Pentium Pro and above CPUs, including all later Pentium-series processors (except most 400 MHz-bus versions of the Pentium M)." - If you have a NON-PAE CPU and would like to install Ubuntu 12.10, please see this link or you can use Ubuntu 12.04 instead. For Intel based Macs, Ubuntu Kylin 14.04 should run on all models.
