You can see a full list of all the blueprints here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric?searchtext=desktop-o

* Gnome3/GTK3 - Plan how to integrate GNOME 3 and port our GTK2/pygtk2 apps to it.
* Unity-2d/Qt by default - Unity-2d as default 2d experience.
* LightDM - default login/user switching by LightDM. Ubuntu themed greeter as well.
* Deja Dup - Simple backup by default
* ISO Localization - Tools and a workflow to provide truly localized CD images. This goes beyond merely installing the right translations, we also want to localize e. g. default bookmarks, or provide a custom background image.
* Gwibber UI - Gwibber UI port to speed up UI and more modern look and feel
* CD Space - Ongoing battle with CD space
* Thunderbird as default - Provisional switch to Thunderbird as default email client
* Software Center UI - Focus areas for this cycle are a general visual "makeover" (new icons, etc.), enhanced integration with Unity, targeted performance improvements, better touch-friendliness, increased stability and usability improvements.
* Mozilla release cycle adaptations - how we adapt to the new rapid release process for Mozilla packages.

Design
* We will be pushing pride and visibility in the next cycle Pride and Visibility Toolkit
* We are also working on updates to the guidelines to make them easier to access and keep up to date Guidelines updates
* We're working with the community web teams to develop and promote a standardised Masthead Standard Masthead
* We also ran a session on how to run a usability session in the wild and we're on hand to help any of the teams that approached us - help and documentation seem particularly keen Running your own usability sessions

Foundations
* We will push forward on porting Ubuntu software to Python 3, with the goal of shipping python 3 as the only version on the CDs for the next LTS.
* At the same time, we will try to simplify the state of affairs for python2 by transitioning existing packages to the dh_python2 helper and enabling use of dh_python2 in lucid backports.
* A lot of work is going into optimizing the package download and upgrade experience, with attention on more dynamic mirror selection, easier unattended upgrades, and use of debdelta to make apt-get update more efficient; as well as support for rolling back upgrades in the event of a failure.
* These optimizations will open the door for enabling a richer set of software sources by default, possibly including backports and debug symbols. With a target of removing ia32-libs from the archive for oneiric, enabling multiarch by default is also being considered.
* Software Center: we will investigate options for better sandboxing of untrusted applications, so that we can make more third-party software available with confidence; and we will also refine the Ratings and Reviews in Software Center, perhaps enabling web-based test-driving of applications.
* Upgrades between releases will be improved, with localization of release announcements and fewer debconf prompts on upgrades.
* Image building: live CDs will switch to using live-build for building, and work will be done to document our image builds for the benefit of third parties wishing to make custom images. We have also discussed whether CDs are still the right medium to continue targeting by default.
* Boot: we will continue to improve the story for upstart in Ubuntu leading up to the next LTS, with work on improving the usability of upstart for admins and converting more sysvinit scripts to upstart jobs.
* Installation: we plan to improve the installation story for Windows users, making Wubi suitable as a default download offering on ubuntu.com; improve our automated testing of the installer to find and fix bugs earlier; and provide an improved advanced partitioner in the desktop installer with support for LVM and encrypted partitions, along with other improvements.
* IPv6: with the exhaustion of the IPv4 address space, it's more important than ever that IPv6 support works well on Ubuntu. We will improve coverage of IPv6 support in the installer and in supported server packages, and enhance our ability to regression-test IPv6 support when making changes to key packages such as eglibc.
* Our focus on quality continues, with efforts to improve the information in package installation bug reports which will allow for better automated triaging of those reports, and to make software RAID more reliable.
* Java is a key topic this cycle, with evaluation of openjdk-7 for main and investigation of available options for Java on ARM.
