From there, we will arrange the sessions into time and day slots, and provide a final schedule on this page.

Attendance

If you would like to attend, add yourself to the [:UES-Sevilla/Attendees:Attendees] page!

There will be some sponsorships for community members to attend the Ubuntu Education Summit who would otherwise not be able to. These will be nominated internally so that people do not need to add their name to an application list (as is the case for Ubuntu Developer Summits).

Calls for submissions now closed

We encouraged attendees to contribute to the programme and discussion agenda, and have received a number of presentations and discussion topics. These are currently being processed.

UES 2007 Presentations

  • 30 minute presentations on experiences or challenges with Ubuntu or other related open source software in education scenarios.

FOSSED conference in USA 2007

David & Matt would like to talk briefly about our upcoming conferences this summer. This will be our 5th year hosting the FOSSED conference (Free & Open Source Software in Education) (also formerly known as NELS ... Northeast Linux Symposium). We've had international attendees in the past....and we also hosted a SchoolTool development sprint last year. The addition of our newest conference in August in Washington D.C. will make international travel much easier for those who might wish to attend or assist with the conference.

aKademy meeting in Scotland - July 2007

The KDE project has every year a meeting called aKademy. This year it'll happen in Glasgow (Scotland) and there will be a focus on Education with a FOSS@School day on Tuesday 3rd July. I am in charge of organizing it and it would be good if Edubuntu representatives can participate. The focus is largely outside KDE-Edu and in the spirit of what I started at FOSDEM it is a way of better promote Free Software in schools by joining forces to be better known.

edubuntu-software-survey

edubuntu-artwork-procedures

The process and responsibilities for Edubuntu Artwork need to be more clearly defined. The Edubuntu artwork should reflect the product as a variant of Ubuntu, but ideally should have its own specific character. UES will discuss the Edubuntu requirements and internal processes, and will carry forward the results into UDS where an overall spec will be defined across all of the Ubuntu variants.

Richard Weideman

edubuntu-documentation-procedures

The process and responsibilities for Edubuntu Documentation need to be more clearly defined. The Edubuntu documentation should fit under the Ubuntu documentation processes and resources / facilities, but has its own specific variations. UES will discuss the Edubuntu requirements and internal processes, and will carry forward the results into UDS where a BOF will be held if needed.

Will van der Leij

edubuntu-mass-deployment-management

There is increasing interest in deploying Edubuntu on a large scale, and we are getting questions on how to best set up the deployment and configuration to reduce installation effort, as well as ongoing administration overhead. We will discuss existing configuration options, documentation of these options (existing and required) as well as what other steps we can take to satisfy the requirement. This is a significant requirement as we wish to target school districts as well as individual schools. Centralised management is a key issue in this space.

Richard Weideman

edubuntu-teaching-computer-programming

Ubuntu includes free application developement tools and utilities and could be easily positioned as a Developer Environment for Teaching Computer Programming. This blueprint will discuss the requirements of the education sector, the curent fit with requrements, what's missing, and how to present this to the target audience.

Richard Weideman

fault-tolerant-edubuntu

If an experienced sysadmin is asked to set up Edubuntu, one of the things they should think about is what happens in the event of failures. If a more novice admin (eg a teacher) does it, it probably never occurs to them. Then one day a disk fails in their thin client server, 30 desktops go down and all their data is lost. The down side of centralisation (ie single point of failure) suddenly hits them. There is little treatment of this currently in edubuntu. Only an experienced admin will realise that they need to put in lots of extra measures to prepare for inevitable failures.

intel-classmate-pc-ubuntu

The Intel classmate PC is a small, mobile learning-assistant educational solution that Intel specially developed for students in emerging markets. Intel are interested in running a version of Ubuntu on the device, and would like to include selected education applications from Edubuntu. An outline spec will be defined with Intel before the Education Summit, and this spec will be fleshed out during UES. The spec will carry forward into UDS for finalisation with the broader Ubuntu developer community.

Richard Weideman

ubuntu-education-community

Jono Bacon and Richard Weideman feel that there is a good opportunity to create a Schools Ubuntu User Community, to unify learners and teachers around the Ubuntu brand, and allow for international projects and synergies. We will discuss ways of setting up this initiative, whereby we can plant the seeds, but allow for independent growth. The Loco structure will be used as a starting point.

Jono Bacon

UES 2007 Product / Application / Tool

  • Presentations on open source products, applications, or tools
  • The shortlist is currently being updated; check back here for details.
