20080425
Welcome to the Kernel Bug Migration Hug Day! Back on October 26, 2006 Ubuntu announced the release of Edgy Eft 6.10. As with any non-LTS release, support is provided for a period of 18 months following the release. That 18 month period has come to an end for the Edgy Eft 6.10 release. The goal of today's bug day will be to migrate any existing 2.6.17 kernel bugs from Edgy Eft to the current Hardy Heron 2.6.24 kernel. We want to make sure that as Edgy nears it's end of life that bugs do not get lost or forgotten as we make this transition.
Here we have a sampling of bugs to work on for Hug Day. After you have triaged or fixed a bug put your name in the last column and set the row's background to green by adding lightgreen in the first cell of the column after "background-color:" and before ";". This will let people know that the bug in that row has been hugged.
You might find it more convenient to edit the wiki page using editmoin a command line utility for editing moinmoin wiki pages. It is available as a package in Gutsy and Hardy. More information including an easier way to do this was mailed to the Bug Squad.
Stock Replies
A stock reply you may want to use when closing 2.6.17 kernel bugs is:
The 18 month support period for Edgy Eft 6.10 has reached it's end of life. As a result, we are closing the linux-source-2.6.17 Edgy Eft kernel task. However, please note that this report will remain open against the actively developed kernel. Thank you for your continued support and help as we debug this issue.
A stock reply you may want to use when asking a reporter to test with Hardy is:
Hardy Heron 8.04 was recently released. It would be helpful if you could test the new release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . You should be able to test your bug using the LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.
linux-source-2.6.17 New Bugs
Here is a list of bugs that should be considered for migration to the Hardy Heron 2.6.24 kernel.
To mark it off the list you should:
Add the Hardy kernel "linux" task to the bug report if it hasn't already been added. This can be done by clicking on the "Also affects distribution" link in the Actions area on left hand side of the bug report. Select Ubuntu as the Distribution and type in linux for the Source Package Name.
- If the bug has not been tested against the Hardy release, please ask the bug reporter(s) to test against Hardy and report back their results (see stock reply above). Set the Hardy kernel "linux" task Status to "Incomplete" and subscribe yourself to the bug.
If there are comments confirming the issue exists in the Hardy Heron 8.04 release, make sure the appropriate kernel debugging information has been provided for the Hardy kernel. If it has, set the "linux" task Status to "Confirmed". Otherwise, ask for the appropriate debugging information and set the 'linux' task Status to "Incomplete" and subscribe yourself to the bug.
- Close the "linux-source-2.6.17" task with a Status of "Won't Fix" (see stock reply above).
If you do not have the ability to set the "Won't Fix" status, tag the bug as edgy-close or ask someone in #ubuntu-bugs to help you mark it as "Won't Fix"
