Sunsetting Ubuntu Friendly
On October 2011 we launched the beta of Ubuntu Friendly, with a clear goal: being the reference of systems that work well with Ubuntu, using the community to test their own laptops and desktops and submit results, using Checkbox, a tool that is currently available in Ubuntu Desktop by default.
The success of the tool has been minimal, looking at usage statistics it is clear that people still relies a lot more on the certification list when looking for systems that work well with Ubuntu.
The cost of maintenance of its infrastructure is high, and cannot be justified looking at the current usage of Friendly. We have decided, therefore, to shutdown the service. The service will be down on the 15th of September, and we are adding a warning message to the page that will be up until that date.
- Today: Ubuntu Friendly site is showing a warning message about its decommission
- 15th September: Ubuntu Friendly site is replaced with a static page announcing that the service is no longer available
- 15th December: friendly.ubuntu.com is removed from the DNS server
Will my data be lost?
The processed data at friendly.ubuntu.com will be removed and it won't be accessible anymore, but the raw data that it is based on will still be available in your Launchpad account.
