General Community News

Ubuntu Server Survey 2012

Canonical has released the results from the Ubuntu Server Survey have been released. Respondents come from across the globe and show it being used for a broad range of workloads. Results show popularity of the extended support releases, for the first time seeing KVM overtake Xen as the preferred virtualization technology for Ubuntu (with VMWare remaining at the top) and while there is “significant interest but the use of Ubuntu Server on bare metal remains the primary use case for most users today.” The full report is available for download.

Vacant Developer Membership Board seat filled

The Developer Membership Board (DMB) announces that Barry Warsaw has topped the votes and is now the newest DMB member. Thanks to Michael Bienia for his many years of service on the DMB and the MOTU council.

Ubuntu 12.04 Development update

Ubuntu 10.04.4 (Lucid Lynx) LTS released!

Release manager Kate Stewart announces 10.04.4, the fourth maintenance update to Ubuntu's 10.04 LTS release. This is the last planned maintenance release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, “which continues to be supported with maintenance updates and security fixes until April 2013 on desktops and April 2015 on servers.”

Jorge Castro discusses his efforts to get ccsm (CompizConfig Settings Manager) removed by requesting fixes or calling for prompt removal of the unmaintained tool. He highlights the work of Alan Bell, Andrew Starr-Bochicchio and Didier Roche who answered his call by getting some of the required fixes committed and released.

A new way to Jam

Michael Hall discusses the upcoming Ubuntu Global Jam and notes that in addition to traditional jam topics “we will be reaching out to the various teams both in Canonical and the Community, and picking some very specific activities that will directly help them make the Precise Pangolin the best release of Ubuntu ever” and announces the Global Jam Dashboard on the LoCo Team Portal, which features an integrated webchat, updating twitter/identi.ca stream, and photo feed.

Linaro Dinner, Ubuntu and Debian Evening and Saving Pangolins

Contacting teams is easier and more reliable

Curtis Hovey writes about two improvements to contacting teams to improve ease and reliability: non-team members now see the “Contact this team’s admins” link and team members can see the “Contact this team’s members” link which will now send emails to the other team members, rather than the “team email address” which not all team members may see.
