Ubuntu Developer Week Planning starts

Daniel Holbach writes for the Ubuntu Classroom blog to Ubuntu developers interested in speaking about development best practices. He announces an Ubuntu developer week coming up from August 28th to 30th, where developers will have the opportunity to share techniques from correct packaging methods to writing good code.

3, 2, 1, Live!

Jose Antonio Rey announces the new “Ubuntu on Air!” project “that will bring instructors, developers, leaders, etc. to your screen” through Google Hangouts. Session attendees will join a new IRC channel set up to interact with the presenter who will give a session and respond to comments and questions from the audience. The first is coming up on Thursday, July 26th at 18 UTC where the team has “Benjamin Kerensa with the Developer News, and Brian Murray explaining us a little bit more about bugs, and how useful are they to make a successful release.”

Valve Games and Steam on Ubuntu 12.04

David Pitkin writes on the Canonical blog about Valve’s announcement that Steam will be coming to Ubuntu 12.04, with Left 4 Dead 2 as the first Steam title ported to Linux. Pitkin says “This is yet another huge development in the gaming space for Ubuntu users.”

Introducing Ubuntu Web Apps: setting the web free of the browser

Steve George writes on the Canonical blog that, starting from 12.10, Ubuntu will come with web applications that behave just like desktop applications. He explains that the web app support will have desktop notifications, launchers and can even integrate with Ubuntu’s HUD. Web Apps will also be available as a preview in 12.04.

Peruvian LoCo Team Re-Approved

Dante Diaz shares the news that the Ubuntu Peru is the latest LoCo team to obtain re-approval as an official team until 2014. Diaz also writes “This recognition would not have been possible without the help of the entire local community through events, talks, and online help making our LoCo Team grow and thrive!” and issues a special thanks to Jose Antonio Rey.

Launchpad News

Bug reporting and search knows about privacy

Curtis Hovey shares that Launchpad has recently improved bug reporting and bug search to be based on privacy settings, from public to private. It also fixed some usability bugs and more.

Beta test: asynchronous PPA package copies

Colin Watson shares details of some of the work which has been done by the Foundations team recently to improve Launchpad’s archive handling. He describes a specific bug where a valuable PPA copying feature is likely to break due to timeouts where it is most useful: for larger packages. An fix which instead does the copies asynchronously has been deployed to the Launchpad beta testers, and Watson describes how they can test and report problems they see.

Didier Roche: Announcing session-migration now in ubuntu

Didier Roche announces a tool he has written for developers to more easily migrate user session data. He writes that the tool “is executed at session startup, in a sync fashion. It contains caching and tries to execute the minimal chunk, based on the design of the excellent gconf->gsettings migration tool.”

Ubuntu TV: Ubuntu TV weekly updates 2 & 3

The Ubuntu TV team comes out with two updates this week. They cover an example application that demonstrates live metadata searching using Nux to render the UI, progress of the transition to Unity 3D, remote control integration, work from the community on Unity lenses and scopes that seem like they would work well in Ubuntu TV requiring little or no modification, and work on the new Ubuntu TV Testcard. For each post they also cover the current status of several parts of the project, areas where they need help and how to get involved.

Jason Gerard DeRose: Testing CouchDB 1.2.0 for Quantal: Help wanted!

Jason Gerard DeRose has made a branch of the CouchDB 1.2.0 Debian package and is calling for assistance in testing it for inclusion in the up and coming Ubuntu Quantal Quetzal release.

Nicholas Skaggs: Testing in Cadence

With a change in the testing methodology being employed for Ubuntu 12.10, iso images are now being tested every two weeks. To achieve 100% coverage on all the iso images and increase the diversity of systems that confirm success or failure a call is being made to everyone interested in assisting to sign up on the supplied wiki link.

IRC Council: IRC Operator Training Classes

There are two upcoming Classroom sessions new IRC operators should be aware of. These important sessions are "Introduction to being an IRC operator" hosted by Miia Ranta (Myrtti) on the 26th of July at 17:00 UTC, and "A grand tour of the channels and bots" with instructor Lorenzo J. Lucchini (LJL) featured on August 2nd at 13:00 UTC. Both classes will start in the #ubuntu-classroom channel on freenode.

Jorge Castro: Democratizing the Cloud - Here comes native OpenStack support for Juju

Jorge Castro reports that at OSCON, Mark Shuttleworth revealed the new native OpenStack provider for Juju on HP Cloud. In this new scenario, the tools and OS are provided leaving the end user the option to choose from Amazon, HP Cloud, Rackspace, Microsoft Azure, or a self hosted OpenStack. This new setup boasts three tier architecture with database replication, caching, load balancers. Scalable architecture with the ability to export out of one environment and into another makes this an excellent option for cloud hosting.

Ubuntu One Files Java library

The Ubuntu One team announces that they are “now releasing a Java library to access files stored in your personal cloud at Ubuntu One, to make them available for use in your own applications.” They also share documentation for how this works and instructions for downloading examples of it being used in a couple simple applications.

Ubuntu Cloud 12.04: Deploying Private, Public, Hybrid Cloud Services with Ubuntu Cloud

Valve announces Ubuntu port of Steam, Source engine, and Left 4 Dead 2

Ryan Paul of Ars Technica writes on the news from Valve about the Linux port of their Steam source engine and work on Left 4 Dead 2 for Linux. He concludes by saying “If major game titles attract a good volume of sales on Linux, its possible that a broader range of third-party software developers and hardware manufacturers will start to consider supporting the platform.”

A first look at Dell's 'Sputnik' Ubuntu Linux developer laptop

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols, ZDNet, takes a look at the goals and aspirations for Dell’s “Sputnik” project, which ships a Dell XPS 13 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. He writes that in addition to supporting cloud developers “the Sputnik will come with profiles that contains all the core programmer tools a developer might need for a particular language or environment” and says “JavaScript, Ruby on Rails, and Android” will be the first three developer “profiles” supported. After looking at an engineering sample he says “I would have been happy to walk away with and start work.”

Canonical announces Ubuntu Web Apps. Webapps integrate your favourite websites directly to your desktop. Using your desktop to directly interact with the web removes indirect access through a browser. Apps include Facebook, Last.fm, Google Plus, Youtube. With PR video.

Shuttleworth: Next year 5 percent of the world's PCs will ship with Ubuntu pre-installed #Linux

Sean Michael Kerner writes for Internet News about Mark Shuttleworth's presentation at OSCON 2012. Kerner covers Shuttleworth speaking about the process leading up to Unity, the HUD, making Ubuntu “more beautiful than Apple” and shipping 5% of world PCs with Ubuntu to emerging markets by next year.

Ubuntu and Thunderbird: What the Future Might Hold

The Var Guy reports on Mozilla’s ceasing development of Thunderbird recently and Ubuntu’s assurances that they will still use Thunderbird as the native offline mail client for the next releases. He speculates that moving forward, Ubuntu may drop an offline mail client altogether in favor of web-based solutions.

Timezone Sorting Added to Ubuntu 12.10 Clock Applet

Joey Sneddon, OMG!Ubuntu!, writes that “recent update to Ubuntu 12.10 has brought subtle improvements to the default date and time applet” and shares an Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 time zone comparison.

Steam’d Penguins

Valve Linux team introduces themselves through the short history on their blog which includes: how team has evolved, interest for moving Steam and the source game engine to the Linux. The team also points out that they will be informing the public through their blog posts about the work progress, which currently includes: getting the Steam client onto Linux with full functionality, optimizing a version of Left 4 Dead 2 running at a high frame rate with OpenGL, and porting additional Valve titles. Ubuntu is currently the only distro that the Valve Linux team supports.

Ubuntu 12.10 To Include Gwibber, Photos Lens By Default

Saurav Modak of Muktware writes about two new default lenses, which will be included in Ubuntu 12.10: Gwibber and Photos. These join existing lenses for Applications, Files, Music and Video.

New Look Nautilus Lands in Ubuntu 12.10

Joey Sneddon, OMG!Ubuntu!, writes about new look for Nautilus which has landed in Ubuntu 12.10. Sneddon points Nautilus changes such as: rejigged toolbar, new sidebar icons, replaced app menu, symbolic icons in the sidebar, ‘just type’ searching, side bar entry reordering and many others.

New Interface For Installing Drivers In Ubuntu 12.10

Surav Modak, Muktware, writes how Jockey, a program for installing additional drivers, will be replaced from Ubuntu 12.10 with ubuntu-drivers-common, and will be presented with a new interface. Modak also shows a mock-up for ubuntu-drivers-common created by Marti Pitt.

Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal: Nautilus gets new toolbar and menu, other important changes

Andrew, WEB UPD8, writes that Nautilus 3.5.4. has been uploaded to the Ubuntu 12.10 repositories. Changes brought in with new Nautilus are namely: a new GNOME 3 style toolbar, new “gear” menu, symbolic monochrome icons for the sidebar and others.

Ubuntu's Unity Desktop Comes To Fedora 17

Michael Larabel, Phoronix, writes how Unity is now available in Fedora 17. Larabel states: “The Ubuntu Unity desktop hasn’t been pushed into Fedora package repository, but via work done by external parties and pushed over the OpenSUSE Build Service.” Larabel also brings Unity screenshots taken under Fedora 17.
