Jonathan Riddell: Plasma 5 Is Green

Jonathan Riddell updates us on the current Plasma 5 build, which he has installed and working for the first time. The current build is not compatible with Plasma 1, and thus installation is not recommended if you aren't OK with breakages.

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: 10,000 Users of Ubuntu Phone

Michael Hall is excited to announce that there are now more than 10,000 users of Ubuntu on tablets and phones around the world. He writes that considering that all of these users are running beta software on devices which were not intended for Ubuntu, reaching 10,000 unique users is quite exciting and encouraging for the future of Ubuntu phones.

Chris Arges begins the first of a series on setting up a virtual machine to to simulate real-world OpenStack deployments. The first post includes step-by-step tutorials to setup the host machine, install and configure a MAAS server and MAAS nodes.

Malta Sprint

Jouni Helminen updates us on the recent design & engineering sprint which took place on the beautiful island of Malta including many great pictures. With more than 150 people in attendance, designs were refined for new mobile apps including Browser, Camera and the Telephony suite (Dialer, Call, Messaging) as well as tech demos and talks on a range of subjects.

Ubuntu to rely on existing fan base before wider launch

Steve Costello reports live from the Mobile Asia Expo 2014 on Ubuntu and Meizu’s plans to leverage their existing fan-bases to create a ‘few hundred thousand’ advocates for the new platform. Christian Parrino of Canonical said “Only when we have these advocates in the market, when there are people talking about it, will we go into physical retail”.

Ubuntu Desktop Next (Unity8) 14.10 Utopic Unicorn Daily ISO Available For Download

Andrew of Web Upd8 reports on the release of the first 14.10 Utopic Unicorn daily build which includes Unity 8, known as Ubuntu Desktop Next. He reminds us that this is a work-in-progress and that included packages will change in upcoming weeks.

Ubuntu 14.10 Server Decides On BCache, Other Improvements

Michael Larabel of Phoronix reports on upcoming improvements and changes to Ubuntu Server 14.10. Major decisions which the team has recently made include making BCache the preferred choice for caching on Ubuntu Server, and including Facebook’s “Scribe” and Meteor in the repository.

Is Ubuntu's Unity Really All That Bad Nowadays?

Andrew Powell of The Linux Rain questions whether Unity is really ‘all that bad nowadays.’ He is one of many converts over the last year or two who have come to realize just how far Unity has come since its initial release more than 3 years ago. He touches on many of the interesting and useful features of Unity including its many keyboard-friendly attributes, its downfalls (especially related to online-search), and the future of Unity 8.

Juju Charm School: Juju Troubleshooting II

This week the Marco Ceppi, Matt Bruzek, and Charles Butler from the Juju Charmers team presented Juju Troubleshooting II. They dove into some of the more commonly asked questions such as "What happens when my bootstrap node goes away?" and "What if a machine is stuck in provisioning state in my cloud provider?", as well as some tips and tricks for troubleshooting when things go away in Juju.
