OpenStack Austin Meetup, with an Orange Box and Home Brew Beer!

Dustin Kirkland announces an upcoming meetup in Austin, Texas on September 10th featuring the Ubuntu Orange Box running OpenStack Icehouse and a “a couple of growlers of my own home brewed beer, Ubrewtu.”

Arizona: Installfest schedule and locations

The Arizona LoCo team announces an upcoming series of installfests Chandler and Tempe in late September and early October. Attendees are encouraged to bring a system they wish to install, and volunteers are also “happy to fix problems, answer questions or simply discuss free software.”

Didier Roche: Ubuntu loves Developers

Didier Roche writes about interest in supporting developers of alternate platforms, like Android, with Ubuntu as a platform. To make this easier for them, he announces the availability of the alpha version of the Ubuntu Developer Tools Center “a command line tool which allows you to download the latest version of Android Studio (beta), alongside the latest Android SDK, and all the required dependencies… enable multi-arch on your system if you are on a 64 bit machine, integrate it with the Unity launcher.”

Your guest, your choice: running Windows Server on Ubuntu OpenStack

Sally Radwan of Canonical announces that they’ve been working with Microsoft to “develop and certify virtio drivers, virtualised Windows drivers that allow Windows guests to run on KVM hypervisors and subsequently, on OpenStack.” Right now, drivers are “available to Canonical customers as part of the Ubuntu Advantage support programme.”

Meeting evolving IT needs at the University of Nantes, France

The University of Nantes in France was seeking to reduce the total cost of ownership across their desktop systems and looked to Linux to help with this plan. The post goes through challenges, considerations and the results including 1700 Ubuntu desktops across the university. The head of infrastructure management was quoted as saying that it was a success, “ In switching our desktop computers to Ubuntu, we have reduced our total cost of ownership in a significant and meaningful way.”

Instant Big Data and other solutions

Maarten Ectors of Canonical introduces the “next level” with regard to deployments with Juju Charms: Instant Solutions. With Instant Solutions the administrator does not have to learn how to use the software that is encapsulated inside the Charm. He gives examples of some current Instant Solutions, including Instant Storm and Instant Scalable & Parallel Video Transcoding.

Scott Gilbertson of The Register does a review of the latest beta releases of the Ubuntu flavors with screenshots, covering Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu and Ubuntu GNOME with a look at the MATE Remix as well. He concludes, “if you like Ubuntu, but aren't crazy about Unity, this year’s crop of alternatives are looking good.”

Canonical Releases Mir 0.7 Display Server

Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes about the latest release of Mir, writing that there are “some improvements to the demo shell, test improvements, symbol files for the Mir library components, build related improvements, motion event resampling and prediction for a more responsive touch experience, and various API/ABI changes.”

NBC, Today Show Use Ubuntu to Illustrate Celebrity Hacking Story

Silviu Stahie of Softpedia reports on the recent sighting of Ubuntu in a Today Show report on NBC illustrating the recent celebrity hacking story. It’s noted that the screenshot is of stock 12.04 and jokes “To make things even funnier (and sadder at the same time), that particular Ubuntu OS seems to be running in VirtualBox, inside a Mac OS host, because this is what every hacker dreams of.”

Munich Library Now Offers Free Ubuntu 12.04 CDs for People with Windows Systems
