Kubuntu: Kubuntu Sweaters Added to Hellotux Shop

The Kubuntu Team writes: "Hellotux have added sweaters to their Kubuntu branded clothes range. Donations to Kubuntu with every purchase." They share a photograph of the sweater and link to site where the sweaters can be purchased.

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Return of the Ubuntu UI Toolkit

Tim Peeters writes that the release of Ubuntu for Phones 15.04 will also see the release of Ubuntu Components 1.2. He looks at some of the new features of components such as MainView, ListItem and UbuntuShape, and says "Besides these new features, we fixed a whole bunch of bugs and we are working hard on the next version of the UI toolkit that we will be blogging about in the near future, so stay tuned for more good stuff!"

Barry Warsaw: Creating Python Snaps

Barry Warsaw gives a quick introduction to Snappy Ubuntu Core which links to details about it, and goes on to talk about building and deploying snappy Python applications. He walks through the basic approach to packaging and provides links to scripts for imports of Python packages from both PyPI and git and concludes with some debugging tips and Caveats.

Ronnie Tucker: Happy Birthday to us all!

Nekhelesh Ramananthan tells us about Podbird, an app for the Ubuntu phone which can search and download podcasts for offline listening. He describes how he joined the team, added some new features such as downloading new podcasts on start-up, and shows us some screenshots of the next version.

Send a URL to your Ubuntu phone with Caxton

Stuart Langridge writes that he often needs to send a URL from his desktop to his phone but there hasn't been a product for the Ubuntu phone until now. He says that Caxton can be used to send any URL from anywhere to any app on an Ubuntu phone. Stuart thanks those who tested and gave advice, and appeals for feedback via Twitter and Google+.

Canonical writes: "M2MLabs’ 100 % open source framework provides the foundation for building the next generation of Internet of Things (IoT) applications." Hack The Home: creating the home of the future

Canonical quotes Mark Shuttleworth as saying "Inventors are gathering at the FirstBuild Hackathon to share ideas and shape their vision of intelligent systems in the home and in business." They go on to say that they are delighted to support FirstBuild at its Mega Hackathon:Hack the Home which takes place on April 10th and 11th, where inventors “will make sci-fi a reality.”

Torvalds' temptress comes of age: Xfce 4.12 hits the streets

Scott Gilbertson of The Register reports that Xubuntu 15.04 will come with an update to Linus Torvalds’ briefly favoured Linux desktop, Xfce. He says some of Xfce 4.12 is already part of Xubuntu but the remainder will arrive in 15.04. Scott says of Xfce: "Xfce has grown in the last few years as the project has become something of a refuge for those unhappy with GNOME."

Canonical to integrate Chef DevOps into Ubuntu

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols for ZDNet writes that with Ubuntu being the most popular Linux on Amazon EC2 cloud it makes sense for Canonical to partner with Chef, one of the most popular DevOps companies. He describes the benefits of Chef, shows us a large scale overview of Chef, and quotes Mark Shuttleworth as saying: "Chef and Ubuntu are often inseparable in serious server deployments, making mutual integration a must for our users."

Christopher Tozzi, The VAR Guy, quotes one of Linux Mint's lead developers Clement Lefebvre as denying rumors that the Debian-based variant of Mint might become the project's main product. Tozzi says: "This might not seem like news worth caring about if you don't use Mint. But it matters for understanding Ubuntu's role within the world of desktop Linux distributions, where Canonical's OS remains vitally important to third-party projects."

System76 unveils all-new Broadwell-powered Lemur -- an affordable Ubuntu Linux laptop

Brian Fagiolo of BetaNews reports on the Lemur, a laptop with a Broadwell processor produced by System76 a manufacturer that sells desktops and laptops which include Ubuntu. He gives us the specification of the Lemur and tells us that the prices start at $599.

Cube i7-CM is an Ubuntu tablet with Intel Core M

Brad Linder of Liliputing writes that Chinese device maker Cube is launching its first tablet running Ubuntu. He gives us a brief specification of the tablet which supports 3G networks, wi-fi and bluetooth, and informs us that a limited number of tablets will be sold for $399, after which the price will increase to an unspecified amount.

Ubuntu on the Asus Zenbook UX305 ultrabook

Brad Linder of Liliputing informs us that he has successfully run Ubuntu on an Asus Zenbook UX305 which features 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD, a 13.3in HD display and costs $699. He tells us that he found that not all distributions would install on the machine but adds: "The good news is that Ubuntu 15.04 64-bit works whether you disable secure boot or not."

Origami unicorn challenge
