Announcement: New Ubuntu Membership Board Members

Elizabeth K. Joseph, on behalf of the Ubuntu Community Council, announces in no particular order the seven people who have been added to the Ubuntu Membership Board.

She thanks the outgoing members, and to the three others who put their name forward for consideration Elizabeth says: “we appreciate your continued work in the community and interest in participation in the board.“

Call for nominations for the LoCo Council

Bhavani Shankar, on behalf of the LoCo Council, asks for volunteers to step forward and nominate themselves or others for the two vacant positions on the council. He informs us of the requirements for applicants to be considered and says that nominations will close on April 28th 2015.

South East Linux Fest UbuCon

Michael Hall informs us that Ubuntu is sponsoring the next South East Linux Fest in Charlotte North Carolina, and that a room will be available all day on June 12th for a UbuCon. Michael is looking for speakers to fill an hour long slot, and asks that anyone who wants to give a presentation on anything Ubuntu related to contact him.

Rafael Laguna of the Lubuntu Team reports the newest fixes for client side decorations from the update by GNOME. Since Lubuntu is in Interface Freeze the changes can’t be added to Ubuntu’s main repos for release.

With 14.10 brought the 1.1 release with Settings API, PullToRefresh, a new Header and much more. 15.04 also 1.2 release will bring ListItem improved, New UbuntuShape rendering, and a new Header.

Nicholas Skaggs: Testing Vivid Vervet final images

Nicholas Skaggs writes that Ubuntu 15.04 will be released on 23rd April and appeals for help in testing the final images. He links to the ISO Tracker where results can be recorded, saying: "Positive results are extremely helpful for this milestone, so please report those too."

Podbird v0.6 Beta - Call for testing

Nekhelesh Ramananthan writes: "Podbird v0.6 is taking shape nicely and brings a boat load of features." He says that Podbird has already undergone a good amount of internal testing but that there is still a lot or work to be done and that testers are still needed to find and report bugs.

The five biggest changes in Ubuntu 15.04, Vivid Vervet

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols of ZDNet takes a look five important changes coming in Ubuntu 15.04 which he says are a switch of init manager from upstart to systemd, a kernel upgrade which features improved graphics and file system support, local menus being made the default, the last iteration of Unity 7 for the desktop, and updated applications such as Firefox and LibreOffice.

KDE Plasma 5.3 Released With Power Management Features

Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! writes that with the newest Plasma release 5.3 brings an great battery usage tracker in KInfocenter. Other features include animated screen brightness changes, keyboard button brightness controls from the lock screen. Joey reminds us that Kubuntu 15.04 will ship with Plasma 5.2.

Xubuntu 15.10 To Drop GIMP, Abiword And Gnumeric, Ship With LibreOffice (Or Parts Of It) By Default

Andrew of WebUpd8 writes that Simon Steinbeiß, the Xubuntu Project Lead, has announced the results of the vote in which the Xubuntu team members were asked if Xubuntu 15.10 should drop GIMP, Abiword and Gnumeric. He says that both GIMP and Abiword will be dropped, and that parts of LibreOffice will be installed by default.

Canonical Updates Mobile OS A Week After First Ubuntu Phone Launched

Lucian Armasu of Tom's Hardware writes that Canonical has updated the Ubuntu Phone's software just a week after the first device became commercially available on BQ's website. He says the Canonical haven't yet said if the Aquaris E4.5 will receive updates for four years but delivering such quick updates is a good sign.

New dual-boot TV boxes run Android + Ubuntu or Windows

Brad Linder of Liliputing writes about two new dual-boot TV devices, one of which runs Ubuntu and Android. He says that the Ugoos UT3S is a system that sells for $179, and has an ARM processor, four USB ports, HDMI and SPDIF ports and a microSD card lot.
