Ubuntu Online Summit

Amrisha reminds us that the next Ubuntu Online Summit [UOS] takes place between 5th and 7th May with “Three days of sessions for developers, designers, advocates, users and all members of our diverse community.” She gives us an overview of the tracks, and previews some of the highlights which include a pre-UOS keynote by Mark Shuttleworth and a Q+A session with Canonical’s CEO, Jane Silber. Amrisha says: “This is going to be perhaps one of the most important summits in recent times. After a successful launch of the phone, followed by the exciting announcement and delivery of snappy Ubuntu Core, Ubuntu is entering a new era.”

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) End of Life reached on April 30, 2015

Adam Conrad, on behalf on the Ubuntu Release Team, follows up on an earlier End of Life warning to advise that Ubuntu 10.04 is no longer supported, that no more package updates will be accepted, and that it will be archived to old-releases.ubuntu.com in the coming weeks. He informs us of the supported upgrade path, links to the instructions and caveats for upgrades, and encourages users to evaluate the latest 14.04 LTS.

Kubuntu Wire: Swapnil Bhartiya Finds a Totally Different Kubuntu

Swapnil Bhartiya writing for Linux.com, tells us that since 14.04, Kubuntu has been getting better and better with each release. He goes on to say that Kubuntu offers a vanilla KDE experience with little to no patches.

Kubuntu: Plasma 5.3

The Kubuntu Team announces that the new version of Plasma 5, 5.3 is packaged and is ready to go for Kubuntu 15.04. They advise that to get the update the backport PPA needs to be added. The Team also advise where bugs should be reported to.

Daniel Holbach: Ubuntu 15.04 is changing the game

Daniel Holbach writes about the excitement around the 15.04 release with regard to Ubuntu Core, saying: “It has been brilliant to watch the snappy-devel@ and snappy-app-devel@ mailing lists in recent weeks and notice how much interest from enthusiasts, hobbyists, hardware manufacturers, porters and others get interested and get started.” He goes on to explain the ease of using it as a base and where to find discussions during the Ubuntu Online Summit.

Xubuntu: Xubuntu 12.04 End of Life

The Xubuntu Team announces that just a few days after their 15.04 release, Xubuntu 12.04 LTS had a three year support period which ended on April 26th. They advise that all users should upgrade to Xubuntu 14.04 LTS, and also link to an article entitled "5 Things to Do After Upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04."

Ubuntu App Developer Blog: Internationalizing your QML app

In an effort to improve internationalization support for apps, David Callé shares a link to the internationalization documentation for QML apps, and writes: “With minimal effort, you can mark your application strings for translation, expose them to community translators and integrate these translations into your package. “

Didier Roche: Ubuntu Make 0.7 released with Visual Studio Code support

Didier Roche announces that Ubuntu Make 0.7 will support Visual Studio Code, the new IDE from Microsoft. He adds that Ubuntu Make is available for installation from a PPA.

Jonathan Riddell: Plasma 5.4 Kicked Off

Jonathan Riddell writes that with not even a week behind them with the Plasma 5.3 release the KDE developers and Designers are working on 5.4. He shares that with a fresh list of to-do items and a design document for the System Settings there is plenty to help out with.

Daniel Holbach: Shaping Ubuntu Snappy

Bryan Quigley: Do tech support? Come check out sosreport

Bryan Quigley informs us that Sosreport is used by Red Hat and Canonical as a tool to collect information from customers' machines when they are have an issue. He says it is open source and free and that he'll be doing a Show & Tell session on it at the upcoming Ubuntu Online Summit.

Michael Hall: Corrections to community donations reports

Michael Hall writes to correct a number of mistakes on the Community Donations reports. He says that the amount shown donated for the period April - June 2013 was incorrect as the amount reflected the period from April - October 2013. He ends by noting that the Community Donation Program is doing very well.

Ubuntu Studio: Precise and linux-lowlatency-3.2 EOL

Ubuntu Studio reports that they are following the recent trend of three years support for LTS releases by ending support for 12.04 as it has been three years since its release. They also note that the package linux-lowlatency-3.2 has also lost support and the last update will be its last.

Ronnie Tucker: Ubuntu laptops available for pre-order with Ebuyer.com

Ronnie Tucker for Full Circle Magazine writes that in the UK, Ebuyer has launched a series of HP laptops preloaded with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. He gives us a brief specification of the laptop, quotes prices starting £199.99, and says that machines should be fully available by the end of May.

Neutron, 0mq and Git deployment – Ubuntu OpenStack 15.04 Charm Release

James Page writes that the OpenStack Engineering Team delivered the latest release of the OpenStack Charms for deploying and managing OpenStack on Ubuntu using Juju. He lists some of the highlights of the release which include Kilo support, the Distributed Virtual Router, initial 0mq support, and deployment from source.

Getting started with LXD – the container lightervisor

Stéphane Graber writes about LXD, which shipped with the latest version of Ubuntu, explaining “LXD is what we call our container “lightervisor”. The core of LXD is a daemon which offers a REST API to drive full system containers just like you’d drive virtual machines.” He goes on to describe why you would want to use it, make s comparisons to other container projects, gives a quick introduction on how to use LXD and wraps up with some future plans and extra resources.

Is Ubuntu moving away from .deb packages? Here is the complete story

Swapnil Bhartiya of IT World addresses recent rumors that Ubuntu will moving away from .deb packages in favor of Snappy by sharing the results of a discussion with Ubuntu Community managers Alan Pope and Michael Hall, and Canonical engineer Robert Ancell. He describes the upcoming versions of Ubuntu aimed for the 16.04 release, including Snappy Core for IoT devices, Snappy Desktop using Mir and Unity 8 and the traditional desktop release based on .deb packages and explores how they all fit into the future of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu 15.10 Plans Being Discussed Next Week

Michael Larabel of Phoronix reminds us of the forthcoming Ubuntu Online Summit [UOS] where community and Canonical plan the release of Ubuntu 15.10. He lists some of the items to be discussed such as the road map for Scopes, the new terminal app, plans for Snappy and making all scripts Python 3 compatible, and links to the official site where further information about the UOS can be found.

Here's what's new in 7 Ubuntu 15.04 offshoot 'flavors,' from Kubuntu to Ubuntu MATE

Chris Hoffman of PCWorld looks at seven of the nine official Ubuntu flavors which released new desktops as part of the Ubuntu 15.04 release. Chris adds that Edubuntu and mythbuntu didn’t see any updates as they are both focused on their 14.04 LTS releases.
