Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) released

On behalf of the release team, Adam Conrad announces the release of Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak). He shares that key features of this release include a new 4.8-based kernel and a shift to the GCC 6 compiler. Other features include incremental updates to LibreOffice, Firefox, and many developer tools. Links for downloading the release as well as the flavor releases are provided.

Ohio Linux Fest 2016

Xenial release party in Tortosa

Rafael Carreras reflects back to the Xenial release party that happened in Tortosa in May. Kees Cook writes about the security features found in the Linux 4.8 kernel. These include SLUB freelist ASLR, x86_64 KASLR text base physical/virtual decoupling, x86_64 KASLR memory base offset, x86_64 KASLR with hibernation, gcc plugin infrastructure, hardened usercopy, and seccomp reordered after ptrace.

Valorie Zimmerman: 2016-2017 Season of KDE begins

Valorie Zimmerman writes about the 2016-2017 Season of KDE. The Season of KDE is where the more experienced help mentor the less experienced, and further KDE.
